5 years ago, or thereabouts we had an airshow. Monday, the next day, at about this time of the day, 8-9a, and I hear a loud drone. What the heck is that? I look out the door and I see a B-17 flying up the valley, 1.5m away. It was pretty loud.

I was like, quick, get the phone, where is it? The damn thing would be gone by the time I could find it. So, I just watched it fly away.

You don't see a B-17 fly by every day of the year.

very low altitude, can see the pilots.

This reminds me of the flyovers that the Air National Guard does at the Pendleton Round-Up each year . During opening ceremonies one year they came in so low I could see the color of the pilots eyes...and of course it scared the bejeezus out of my son (who was very little at the time, and our old seats were uncovered), he looked at me and tearfully asked if they were coming back, and of course I said no (normally they do not)... just then they came in low from behind us and roared over again Shocked , my son was fully wigged out by this time poor thing, he was very suspicious of my affirmations for a while after that Very Happy

Anyone seen a T-3B? My buddy caught a phone pic 2 years back. They have some weird undercoating that makes them hard to photograph during the day. IT was very fast, flying up a canyon in the Colorado mountains

Hey, it could have been a B-25. It would not have been a loud "drone." More like, your best china is vibrating to a very loud noise out of your hutch... Loudest damn non turboprop propeller plane ever made...

When I was a kid going to New Egypt Speedway near Fort Dix and McGuire AFB. I would see Phantoms and cargo planes fly over all night.
Back home where I lived, we were in the flight path for Newark Int Airport. Close enough to here the clunk of the flaps as the descended.

When I was really little, like 4 or 5. I have a memory of all the kids running through the neighborhood and pointing up. All I can remember was a crazy low blimp flying over and I swear I can remember men standing like behind a railing, on it and it was all gray. But I was really young. So who knows. Probably 1970. Linden regional airport was kinda nearby. They would have a blimp there in the 90’s (Fuji?).

Last year I was sitting here at my desk when I heard a what I knew was definitely a military jet engine.
We live about 15 miles from Rickenbacker Airport which homes an ANG base with F-15 and also is an air refueling wing. John Glenn Int. is up the road about 20 miles. I-270 is along the flight path for all the commercial planes. They definitely sound different.
Anyhow, I heard a roar that literally shook the house! That's when I saw my first B-2 Stealth Bomber. Absolutely incredible!
It was fairly low and was making a climbing bank nearly over the house.
I then learned it had just done a fly-over at the "Shoe" for a celebration at an Ohio State Buckeyes football game.
The story of the pilot was pretty cool too. He was an Alumni Cool

I live near a major Air Force Base maintenance depot. I can sit in my front yard and watch the planes approach the runway and take off. I see B-1's every couple months. A couple times a year I'll see a B-2 flying in. I see AWAC plans (with the big radar dome on top) every few days. I got to see the Space shuttle fly in on piggyback. I've seen Air Force One fly in.

Many years ago my mom worked in the cafeteria on base. Every Friday they would serve fired catfish. Pilots from all over the country that had to get in their "training hours" would fly in just to eat the catfish.

The B-1's & B-2's are the most badassed planes on the planet.

Something big just flew over the house as I am typing this.

About 20 years ago, I saw the space shuttle. I was visiting my mother when a childhood friend was walking down the street with binoculars. I asked where you going. He said, to view the shuttle. He taught me a lot about astronomy and photography when we were younger. Anyhow, he knew exactly where to look. The shuttle looked like any satellite, but still very cool.

NJ John, I’m posting this because you have fun memories of the Space shuttle. I do too.

In 1981, I was in the 6th grade I was flying from San Francisco to Los Angeles for a connecting flight to Hawaii. It was my first time traveling solo. I was going to visit my dad during Spring Break. Can you imagine putting a 12 year old kid on a flight without a chaperone in 2022? Shocked (I think it is safer now to be honest)

Back to the The Space Shuttle. We were flying near Edwards AFB when the pilot announced we have a delay in our flight because the Space Shuttle Columbia was making its first landing from its first mission. We had to fly in a circle until The Columbia landed. You could see the whole event happening. From the Columbia escort to touch down. It was a bird’s eye view. Everyone started clapping and cheering when the Columbia touched down. In this day and age our airplane, wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near AFB for an event like that. It was a special day.

Unfortunately in high school science class I watched the Columbia’s final mission on live TV. That was a sad day.

Great memory. I should have changed the title of this thread, “Things we see in the sky”. Lol

We used to see the Stealth Bomber flanked by a Stealth Fighter flying as low and slow as they could, right over our house. This was every year for the Rose Parade, living just East of Pasadena. Fun stuff!

Too cool ... stealth planes, never seen one.

In the '90s I lived in a tiny town of 900ppl.
I would go 2miles out of town - VERY dark - to see lunar eclipses & such but once I saw the Space Shuttle fly over for a night landing. It threw 2 super long contrails that were so bright there were shadows.

Around 2010 there was a smallish air show in the Hill Country. There was an outfit where you could ride in a B-17 - was about $175.

stay safe ... jinx

@ Abscate :
Thanks, that got me ... had to clean up the tea I just spit on the screen. I needed that cuz my daily got towed to the shop Thurs eve.

The west side of San Antonio has daily Air Force cargo planes flying overhead. These things are massive and go so slow it looks like there's no possible way they could maintain altitude.
Our tax dollars at work.
