Hey finster, any data associated with this caption?
This must be one of the very first 356s Alloy-bodied handbuilt cars from Gmünd-Carinthia. By the looks of it, even looks like that the semaphore pockets at the front fenders are still empty, maybe together with spark-plugs, air filters, bulbs, those were also in the rare-comodity parts smuggling list mentioned by the R. von Frankenberg book.
At the time, in the early days of post WWII, Porsche was basing most of their cars with salvaged running gear from Kubel and other VW derivatives. That good looking Kubel visible in the photo, undoubtedly didn't contributed with any parts for this Porsche's new car!
Since they were far from Stuttgart, and had no access to the wind tunnel on the Stuttgart University, they had to resort to sticking stripes on the bodyshell and running the open road, in order to carry out the aerodynamic evaluations. It would be interesting to know more about this photo. |

that is a photo at gmund, it's from a book but I don't know which one - perhaps ludvigsen's 'origin of the species. the kubel appears to have a hard top fitted but there is a kubel in the background of other photos of the porsche workshop at that time.

^ So I thought. It is about the Porsche 356/2, the first Coupé. Thanks for clarifying.
Like mentioned (& seen) by both of us, at that time, the Gmünd Porsche "factory" was fully surrounded by Kubels or at least, plenty of their remains, either for reparatur or for parts grabbing.
Ahh, those were the days, really a shame that our Portuguese fair proposal of exchanging Alloy 356s for canned sardines was so prompted rejected by the Porsche Company...  Never really understood, good quality tin cans & delightfull lithography, not to mention tasty sardines & quality olive oil to boot.
All of it looked fair...  |

Yeah, but not only that: fuel rationing going on (look at the stamp in the license plate) and she insists in going out with the car! High maintenance indeed. |

the rolling rag top looks to be a 38-39 .  by the bumper guards.
