Warning: Lots of photos...

Next week I head down to SoCal to check out the Notchback and start some assembly work. Until then I've been messing with more interior items. I bought some early door stuff from my buddy Bertrand in France. He sent over a bunch of original door cards and some armrests, etc. I figured I'd see what I can do with one of the armrests...

This is not for the faint of heart and if you don't want to see a somewhat decent grey armrest be ripped apart, I'd tap that back button right now.

Here's the armrest. It had a pretty big chunk missing from the top and I just don't want to run this thing in a freshly painted car. So, I started peeling it back. When it ripped I knew there was no turning back.

Next I started to repair the holes and that large missing chunk using some expanding insulation foam. I recommend gloves as this stuff does not want to come off of fingers. I smeared it into the holes and then used an orbital sander to take down the high spots, and an 80 grit block to finish it.

Then it was time to wrap it. I had purchased some pebble vinyl material from Amazon about a year ago that Jason (Notchboy) recommended. I bought the light grey and the black. The pebble finish is pretty good, but the grey is way too light. I tried spraying a test piece with some Anthracite from WW and it came out pretty good. I figured I'd go with it so I wrapped it in that light grey vinyl, and then sprayed it with the Anthracite. The handle area is about 90% but I'm not too upset with my first attempt. The missing chunk spot has a slight dip to it but I'm probably the only person who will notice.

I have to agree with Jason on that one. Very well done. I think you've saved it. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. You knew it was blown out in places, so you might as well strip it and fix it.

Only thing I could add - Bondo would of been your friend as well making the fill points sharper. Looks so good. Cool

Yup, do all 4, and they'll match. It's hard to tell if they're off that way. Wink

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I hate bondo.

Did the same process to this armrest as well. It was cracked in a couple spots and missing a chunk in the rear so what the hell, right?

Stripped it down. Couple issues to fix.

Filled in the gaps and started building out the rear part that was missing. There's no easy way to do this and sometimes it will take a few layers with the foam.

Fill. Shape. Sand. Fill. Shape. Sand. Smooth. Repeat if needed.

Then I wrapped it. Same issues around the handle area but not much else I can do there. It's much cleaner overall than the first one I did. The ends came out great. I'll paint it when I get to the rears in SoCal.

Nice job. Armrests came out really nice. I think the only way to get by laying down wrinkles like that on a complex curve is to use a steam gun or use a heat gun very carefully. You can get the material to loosen up while it's being glued. I've used steam guns doing headliners and seats before, I'm thinking it would work here too.

Great job though, the anthracite paint is pretty close. Is it made to dye? Do you think it will hold to the vinyl?
