Hey All,
A few months back, I had my beloved 1998 Jetta TDI stop working as I was turning left onto a relatively busy road during rush hour on a Wednesday morning. It feels like I blew through 1st gear on the transmission and it won't move when in that gear. It will start moving in that gear, but it reaches a point where it stops. All other gears even reverse work fine but I have parked it and haven't taken it on the roads above 35 miles per hour.
The rattling persists when it is in neutral with the clutch out, but when the clutch is engaged the rattling stops.
I love the car and am wondering if my first assessment of the bad first gear was a mistake and it might be something less severe like a clutch of something. I'm not as mechanically inclined as I would like so these are just my best guesses. Any help would be much appreciated. |

Hi, is that manual transmission? If positive, dual mass flywheel issue? |

Yes it is a 5 speed manual. I am not sure what a dual mass flywheel is, but I will go and do some research. Does it often fail? |

A ‘98 should be a mkIII car, those do not have a dual mass flywheel.
More than likely your intermediate shaft or pinion gear failed. This will require a replacement transmission. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Oh! I totally overlook the fact that for a looooong time North America consumers only had a chance to opt for a 66kW TDI whereas in Europe, since at least 1995, consumers could opt on the Vento (Jetta) and Golf (among plenty of others) also for the 81kW variable geometry turbocharged TDI that was paired with dual-mass flywheel clutch packs.
Nevertheless, hope the OP gets to the root of his problem. |
