Metal bow measurements needed:

I posted this question in the bodywork forum but didn't get the measurements.
I came across this image in the classified and sent it to the owner but never heard back.

Hoping someone has theirs somewhat apart and available so I can fab a new bow.

I am hoping the tops didn't change too much from a split to an oval

The metal bow (bow 2).

Measurement C = distance from the ends of the flat bar sections where the round tube connects.

Measurement A = The height of the flat bar where the round tube starts.

Measurement B = If I laid a flat bar across the bow at the ends of the flat bar, what is the distance to the top of the round tube

From measurements A and C I can pretty well bend the flat bar to shape, all though having the actual distance of the flat bar from the rivet to where it starts to bend would be great.

Let me know if that makes sense.

thanks

Lars, thank you so much, that first image is wonderful!, But also raises another question..... Shocked

The bow leans forward. I know this is a lot to ask, but could you drop a plumb bob from the center of the round tube and measure the distance back to the bow attachment? Measurement D

Beautiful color and stance.
I hope you have a chance to document the top installation.

Awesome Lars! A lot of us out here with 1956-'57 Ovals will really appreciate you documenting your top build when you get to it. Any info on your suppliers, the hard parts, the easy parts, any "tricks" to doing the install will only help all of us when we start our roofs! Thanks for documenting it all!

I recently purchased almost all of the wood bows and pieces for the top in my 1957 Kabriolett from Chuck's Convertibles. I held my breath until they arrived, and when they did, I am pretty happy. The pieces look beautifully made and the wood quality looks to be very nice. I am nowhere near the point of putting one of my roof frames onto the car and trial fitting the new wood, so I can't yet report on how precise the shapes and holes drilled for the mounting hardware line up, but I suspect that all will be fine! Here are some of the wooden goodies:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I have one top frame that has no wood (just the metal top frame and latches) that was restored and powder-coated by Chuck that I bought from him when I purchased the Kab (which came to me all apart and with an incorrect mid '60's top frame not mounted to the Kab) way back in 1994. Still stored in the box:

In the late 1990's I ran into and purchased another decent top frame with original worn bows and tattered upholstery in a Seattle Vintage Meet swap meet and shipped it home for storage and future dissection and analysis. The best top will eventually be built with Chuck's wood bow kit and upholstery...

I bought the '56 vert about 3 years ago in Belgium, was registered for last 20 years on the Belgium roads, but in '56 sold in Germany. As you can see there is a lot of work to do. Had in the ninety's a restoration in Germany, with the wrong heather channels
and very bad welding skills. Original color is Iris bleu. I hope finish the vert next year and drive with to Bad Camberg, Germany

I have a second top that I am sure is not an oval. I posted a request for any information on the year(s) so I can sell it properly.

If you have any interest, here is the thread

Still working on my top bow but the windows are first.

The door channels are a mess, I am going to wait to see what I can do about those however, I did find a set of rear frames that I was able to fix.

I have the rubber gaskets for the glass (WW), the glass and the frame.

Having installed several parts upside down or backwards I think its best to ask a simple question or two:

1. Can I assume that I will cut the rubber at a 45 at the 90 degree bend?

2. Install the rubber onto the glass rather than into the channel.

2b. Glue onto the rubber? Seems like it will stay put once in the channel and held in by the 2 bolts

3. I am going to have to pull on the curved end to get the glass and the rubber into the channel..

Taking them apart https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=393100. (2010) is when I took these bad boys apart. Ruptured disks are a bitch

Cheers

Peter
