Watched the whole video last night. Amazing team of workers, fighting back against a never ending list of Dormant Vanagon issues……
The No Funnel part was actually funny, it’s the littlest things that trip us up at times.
All in all, a super epic adventure…. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

That was a joy to follow along! So many funny moments. Love the teamwork, organization, and nearly endless trial and error. Ahhh, Vanagon ownership. _________________ 83.5 Vanagon Riviera WBX 2.2 "Brown Loaf"

-It's funny, once we got it to run and were able to drive it to the bar Friday night, actually Saturday morning, you guys were planning on spending the entire next day just getting your Ostrich eggs and cleaning the van despite the fact that it had no brakes, needed a guy in the back working the throttle and another guy hanging a work light out the window to see! thinking to myself, "these gyuys are nuts!, they've got two more full days of work to go!".

Hahaha, yep, its the little things we forget sometimes! You forget just what tools you actually need to get the job done and get spoiled by working in a garage full of the things you know and love. |
a guy that travels unknown remote places on his motorcycle said that he only works on his bike with the tools he carries on the bike - even when at home - so he knows he has what he needs when he's out and about. _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

We did spend some time dreaming that evening, but to be fair.... we didn't get our ostrich egg, we did eat the lobsters, and we did make it home, so..... WIN?
It was the heat of the next day that sucked the most, and the fact that we tried to do as few brake lines as we could instead of just saying "Were doing all the brake lines" and thus, spent WAY more time eventually doing all the brake lines then if we'd set out to do that properly.
I feel bad about the ostrich egg though.... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=559766&highlight=winter+rust

Great video, entertaining and informative. And its crazy because I just picked up a 87 GL that sat for 20 years so this video helped me figure out what I need to replace as well.
I towed my home because its just me.
Anyways, thanks for taking the time to record and share _________________ Dave

That was one of the best recovery and "rolling restoration" videos I've seen in a while. Certainly on par with VGG/JYD, etc.
Also, one of the best repurposes of White Claw I've ever seen putting it in the coolant pressure tank!

Am I a "NooB"?
Such an honor!
I can't imagine how the 17 years of owning dozens and working on hundreds of vanagons have helped me to grow into this revered status! I see 5 vanagon owners each willing to take a 1200 mile round trip trip, with only a week and a half notice. I see the story of 4 very reliable and trustworthy vehicles driven by very knowledgeable and confident owners that were able to complete a relatively bold trip that very very few of the most experienced owners or mechanics would have taken on. I'm proud to tell the story of this adventure, totaling 5,400 Vanagon Miles traveled on cars that didn't have or need months of planning and prep to accomplish, and I'm proud to speak with authority on the subject.
I'm thankful that my friend, Mr Flint, joined us for a segment of our adventure, he's truly an expert I respect, and I'm proud that he chose to spend time with us and contribute to our crew. But if you see this story as Andrew single handedly making this adventure possible and a team of misfits- keep in mind he was there for 5 hours or so of the workload, which totaled around 30 hours, and none of the breakdowns, rescues, and successful repairs that lead to the successful conclusion of this story.
I hope your comment came with the intention of kindness, as it doesn't appear to read that way. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=559766&highlight=winter+rust

It’s so much easier to be a jerk on the internet, than it is to be kind…
Any updates on the Van after he got it home? Too bad I couldn’t have dropped in on this when I was in NY with my Doka. I probably would have just slowed you guys down though

he's real good at talking out of the corner of his mouth. ignore him
the only comment's i can make is your breakdown(s) in the beginning are a reason why i'm a wiring freak. that was all preventable
other than that, you guys did a great job and Andrew is a top shelf guy. i'm just an asshole with a potty mouth but i hope to grow up to be like Andrew someday _________________

Yep! We got it home and spent a weekend swapping in the rebuilt engine with a full fresh exhaust, properly fixing the throttle setup… |
I was curious if the new motor would be installed, since the old one seemed to have good compression. But then again, why hold on to a rebuilt motor waiting for the day (some failure) that it makes sense to install. 👍🏽 _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

Exactly! Plus the exhaust was literally not attached to this engine by the time It got home. We "took a header off" while removing the engine, with no tools. It literally just fell on dan's head.
With a refreshed intake, new fuel lines, and a few powder coated pipes, fresh exhaust, new water pump, etc- this fresh engine is set up for success!
I'm proud of Curt, he went from being a new vanagon owner without much experience to someone with a freshly rebuilt engine he swapped in, fully rebuilt brake system, etc etc etc in less then a month. He spends all his free time working on his bus and keeps solving problems, slowly bringing all systems back to life! Heck, we've already pulled the dash and fixed some melted wiring!
It's truly coming along nicely! _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=559766&highlight=winter+rust

Great story! You have some solid friends.
I appreciate the time to make the video too, will help keep my moral up when some kinda fluid starts puking out of a dark place underneath in the middle of a trip “At least I have a funnel to put it back in…” I can say to my self
Do have Curt post an “after” photo down the road. It’s a very nice van!
