|
|
I am pulling the engine from the car on my 69 fasty so I can put on a new exhaust. A number of the push tubes are leaking and I decided from my research, that best to go with solid original one-piece style over the available spring-loaded and other adjustable choices.
I have not re-built an engine before and will not be doing so here. But, I assume I need to pull the heads off (or at the least, loosen them some) to get the new one-piece tubes in. I have not removed the heads before. If I am going to loosen them to put these tubes in, should I pull the heads completely off and replace the head gaskets? Or, can I avoid that? Should I?

There are no head gaskets.
Yes, you need to remove the heads to install the stock pushrod tubes. _________________ Glenn

is pulling the heads simple enough? I don't want to get in over my head. Maybe I'm better off going with the adjustable or spring loaded, to avoid removing the heads _________________ T-roy

Just make sure the cylinders don't come loose or they will leak. _________________ Glenn

Thanks all. I pulled the motor. Mine is an automatic. As I pulled the engine away from the tranny, quite a bit of tranny fluid ran out onto the floor. is that expected? I know that torque converter is full of fluid, and as it is pulled away from the main seal, i guess the fluid above the center line of that converter will leak out.
my question is simply to know if it is normal for some tranny fluid to come out when i pull the engine, or if this is a sign of an issue?
Thanks _________________ T-roy

Yes as there is no way to remove the fluid from the torque converter. Be very careful when putting the motor back in with the torque converter - you dont want the center spline of the trans out and not indexed - or you will crush the small gear inside.
Im in the process of changing heads on my T3 motor with fresh pushrod tubes as well. _________________

Hey Notchboy, I pulled on the center spline and it started to come out. So, I attempted to push it back in, but it hit some resistance. Is there a technique to re-aligning things so that center spline can get pushed in? _________________ T-roy

Twist it while pushing it back in. It needs to have the teeth line up inside. If its sticking out at all then its not in/teeth lined up. Thats how they break. _________________
