I'd be going though grounds as a start. _________________ 1987 Westfalia 2.1 WBX Manual |

Mine did something similar (without the LED issue) and I was convinced it was a Hall Sensor issue. I popped a new cap and rotor on it since I had them on hand and that completely fixed the problem. Go figure. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

D15 pin issue? the coolant circuit firing off with engine issues is saying to me a power problem. _________________ -dan

Dave, is this for Dbaron's issue?
if so, why have 2 threads?
and why won't he/you post what his symptoms and such are in the OT?
if it's for some other poor road bound soul... we need a little more info too. _________________

Tell your friend to keep an IR gun handy in the van. Next time the light flashes, they should pull over and collect some data. |

Yes, it is Steve's Van.
I did a separate post because of the LED correlation. |
It all should be in one topic, as we moderators tell others, especially if he's on the road and has multiple symptoms.
Symptoms/updates from the other topic (which is now locked):

Just got back from a drive to get gas and the issue did not happen… not the valve (whew). I’m thinking it’s a wiring or heat issue, it was really really hot today, the LiFePo temp sensor is saying 97.5F…
we will press on, you only live once

Pulled into Keene NH and the issue is back. a few minute prior the coolant temp gauge stopped working. found a broken wire and fixed that, also cut out some cracks in the temp2 wiring.
of course it’s been raining adding to the difficulty in troubleshooting.
we will press on knowing it’s wiring related, maybe. i have a spare known good coil just in case |

i have a ‘78 bay. don’t know jack about 2.1’s.
for what it’s worth, my bus recently began suddenly stalling out. sometimes it would restart, other times it’d take a while. it would fire, but then stall out. if i leaned on the accelerator, sometimes it would run.
after some diagnosis, i replaced the fuel pressure regulator. seems to have done the trick.
hope you find your issue soon. _________________ 1978 Champaign Edition 2 Westfalia

Sounds like the same issue I’m having minus the flashing low coolant led. |

I had a 2.1 van in here once that would barely run at time then run perfectly fine. After a while, I noticed that it was only running bad when the radiator fan was on. After many hours, I found that the engine/ transmission grounds to body despite looking good were not doing the're job but only when there was a heavy electrical draw. New grounds fixed it. |

Not sure about Steve’s van, but I installed an extra ground wire for the radiator from GW. |

the final resolution was to replace the coil. after about an hour of driving it would no longer provide spark at under 2000 rpm in a consistent manner.
i also had a bad alternator power regulator as well as a broken ignition wire where it connects to the dizzy.
the Westy is back to miles of smiles.
trip report is in the works. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper

That’s great to hear, but so random it was the coil. |
