Looks like they cleaned up the mess pretty good in the after pics...
Emergency vehicles, in fact all vehicles, had so much more style and uniqueness compared to today, what a vanilla world we live in now.

So apparently this happens somewhat frequently. The Navy does maintenance on its carriers up near Seattle and the ships are based in San Diego and since a refit of an aircraft carrier can take up to three years they just let the crew bring their cars with them rather than pay for transporting them over land. It happened again in 2018 with the USS Ronald Regan. |

^ yes, seems unusual to have an nsu - citroen dealership and no vw signage...looks like a dkw 1000sp and a bmw 502 in the front row

That's my friend Greg M (63vwdriver) with his sister's '71 yellow Super Beetle Sedan, his blue '73 Standard Sedan, and dark green '65. Taken 1989 in Connecticut. The '65 was his first registered VW, drove it from '82 thru '91 then sold due to excessive rust. The '73 was a true daily driver, from '87 thru '91 in which he drove it over 40,000 miles including a x-USA trip. Here's a better photo from my gallery which Greg OK'd-
Greg's '73 at Loveland Pass, Colorado in 1989 along US Route 6 east of Dillon. It was the original route over this portion of the Rocky Mountains before the Eisenhower Tunnel was built on I-70. He continued west from there over to Los Angeles, then north to San Jose, CA. Major leg heading east was from Fresno, CA to Jacksonville, Florida in 4 days. |
