I've got a 74 super and currently have the Empi filter adapter mounted under the driver side rear fender using a single bolt shared with the bumper. This places this adapter quite close to the fender, so I have to connect the oil lines on the forward side. See photo here:

This leaves no space rearward for my oil temp and pressure senders. This works currently with no senders used. I want to switch to this style:

I'm thinking of making an adapter out of aluminum to move the filter forward yet still attached using the bumper bolts. The ones available from vendors are for the earlier bumper style. Has anyone done this? Or do people just screw it into the body further forward using 3 large self-tapping sheet metal screws?

Hey, My pic!

I currently have mine secured with a single bolt and a wide washer on one of the bumper bracket bolts, at an angle with the filter bottom facing forward to the front of the car, hoses coming straight down. I need to redo the hoses to have 90's on the ends to relocate on the bracket i bought for it, as the hoses aren't long enough with straight ends-

I might actually mount it anyways, and just drill some new holes in it in the meantime. The bracket fits the holes perfectly, just my hoses wont work as is.

If you don't want to buy something pre-made, I would go to the hardware store and get some steel stock to make a bracket to locate it up higher, but then you need to get longer hoses depending on how you do it.

That EMPI bracket is no good for 74. VW changed the bumpers in 74.

Just drill a hole and put a bolt there to mount it to.

Completely forgot about the shock mounted bumpers 74 and later Embarassed

looks like a custom bracket is your best bet then for sure.

Personally I don't know if I would do self tapping screws. Maybe some through bolts with lock washers, and some really wide washers on the opposite side to spread the force and reduce flex? That's how the bracket was mounted on my 75. May be a little fiddly at first install but would be rock solid, and unobtrusive if you use allen headed bolts with the smooth head on the inside of the engine bay.

Yes, I think this is my best bet. Similar to Glenn's pic above.

I also need to replace my hoses. Does the oil need to be drained fully for this? Or is the level in the case below the pump outlet?

I'm probably missing something, but why can't you just add T fittings between the hoses and the adapter body pointing upwards, to mount the senders to?

The inlet/outlet are above the level in the sump, should be able to just open the hoses and drain them. Be prepared, a surprisingly large amount of oil can be in the hoses and galleys, and will make a hell of a mess if you aren't prepared. Laughing
