I just got back to wrenching ,carefully, after an episode of carpal bone/carpal tunnel problems which rendered one hand useless and quite painful for almost 2 weeks. Just hard to touch any tools. Went to Doc, sent for xray, wait 2 days, get RX for cream that is same %...But available cheaper as an OTC(voltran).
So here's the rub (no rubbing here).... After xray results,Doc sends a referral to" Ortho" Doc, Not even a call back in 9 days. So much for US Healthcare, I was under the false impression that hospitals and medical pro's were anxious to get my money. I'll be anxious to see if I hear from anyone before my next fol-up with the primary doc.Getting older is a joy.

I don't think this is just health care. Try to get anybody to do work around your house or your car for that matter. I tried to get some sprinkler work done at a rental (I do my own stuff at home, but farm work out at the rental when I can) and was told I'm a month out. My coworker has an appointment in September to fix her wrecked car. I thought that was out of the ordinary until my wife's friend wrecked her car last week and was quoted over a month to get it in.

Well I would hope it's different when it comes to Healthcare, but apparently not. I just waited 24 days to get an A/C tech to my house. He said they are fully booked weeks out, don't work on Saturdays. Something's wrong. I was in a home service business for 35+ years, and if the scheduled ever got that full ,it warranted paying more employees (adequately) to be able to take that biz ,and thus the profit, sooner than later or leaving it for another company.
I'm actually beginning to think that being older and time limited, is gonna prove better than the alternative future. Smh,sadly.

What's wrong is everyone got fed the 'work smarter, not harder' BS and the trades fell to the wayside.

your average auto tech is now 40, and a HVAC tech is 55, yes, 55 years old.

in the auto biz, especially 'dealer life' we worked 6 days a week, and one night late. then that changed to 2 late nights and 7 days a week.

there comes a point when the money doesn't matter. people pay for my time, but i can't buy time for myself.

it seems the tide is turning in the trades, and young guys are starting to trickle in but we went decades without them coming in.

until then, get ready to wait. those that are busy are running at full capacity and it isn't ez finding help especially in this 'everyone get's a trophy' world

i know a shop right now that's offering a 10k sign on bonus and willing to pay relocation fees.

it's bad out there

As a 57 yo service/install tech, my body can't physically do crap like a 40 yo anymore. Expecting employees to work 60 + hours a week is going to lead to personnel issues, which will lead to even longer lead times. It's happening in every aspect of our business with no end in sight. We are over worked, under paid, burnt-out, and ready to snap.
My financial adviser said I can't retire yet, but I don't have to keep this job.

Don't wait on a call. Call every day if you need to. Treat healthcare like everything else in life - take charge of it and don't wait on others who forget you as soon as you walk out the door.

I have a close personal friend that is in administration in a large hospital ( part of a massive corporation). Medical can't retain doctors at any price. The average age is way up there and the environment is very stressful, they bail out as soon as possible. Travelling nurses take up the slack. Expecting much out of the minimum wage tier of workers is like expecting to see the same person at the coffee shop ( they quit and try their hand at the next rotating low paying job ).

Quitting, giving up, trying vanlife...its all part of the new way.

This is a trend in China called “laying flat”, that is trickling its way into the US.

The government(s) is literally incentivizing people to do nothing through section 8, SNAPS, WIC, Covid relief, stimulus checks, & lockdowns. Living at poverty level sucks, but why work your ass off if you can achieve the same results doing nothing?

Can't agree more. You have to be proactive about everything these days.

You think doctors/nurses/radiology techs etc re being incentivized by the government to do nothing? Thats just plain silliness an listening to too much of a certain TV "news" station.

Fact is that everything is harder to get now because of covid and the impacts it had. Supply chains, labor shortages, inflation, wages. Burnout in the medical field is especially high.

I too am dealing with a significant medical issue. After being "diagnosed" by my local hospital I was given my first appointment more than 6 weeks out. My wife (a nurse) said "no way!" and got on the phone and within the time my original first visit was scheduled for, I had seen two doctors, had a surgical procedure, and began treatment at one of the country's best hospitals.

Like another poster said....put some effort into your own healthcare needs. More people expel more effort to buy a car then they do their own healthcare needs.

Yeah, and from the society where grade point averages have soared, but the students know way less, as evidenced by standardized tests such as SAT.

It's called grade inflation, no flunking, and other $%^$@$^%$@ names.

Collectively, who are your healthcare providers? I have had Kaiser for 35+ years and they have been great, at least here in SE LA County (Downey and Bellflower). I have heard a lot of horror stories regarding the "Blues" (Anthem and Cross) but my family has always received prompt and excellent care form Kaiser Permanente when needed.

clearly you're not raising a kid today

my mother worked in the medical profession her whole life. 3 things she told me were advocate for yourself or have someone that will and if you don't like what's going on question it and always get a 2nd or 3rd opinion.

we lost a lot of healthcare pros due to mandates. we got what we deserved

Its a tough thing to claim if you haven't spent time in college recently.

My kid came out of college FAR more intelligent and well rounded then when he went in and FAR FAR FAR smarter then I was when I graduated 37 years ago.

Its not even close....

My healthcare is through my wife's employer (the hospital who initially treated me and set my FIRST specialist appointment out for 6 weeks from discharge after 11 days of hospitalization).

The insurance has been OK. I pay extra to be treated at a world class hospital. But its not a lot....something like $25 extra for a copay. My treatment so far has cost probably over $100,000 and I have maybe paid $5k out of pocket. It would have been a lot less if I stayed in their system but I made the choice to go outside of their system.

I spent the night in a Kaiser ER a couple months ago due to a fall and then got some bloodwork. Aside from the noisy SOB "cleaning" workers at 0200 I got out the next morning with a $50 co-pay. I'll take it...
