From what read the reason the Car 54 were painted red and white so they would not get mixed with real police cars while they filming at different locations around the city. Both green and red look black when filmed with black and white film.
I was 5 when this show was on TV. Back then we had the choice of 3 channels to watch from.
I really enjoy seeing the reruns when they show up every few years.
Two of the actors were also in The Munster’s TV series.

Green and red do not look the same when shot on black and white film. The reflections off of a red surface are not as dark as the reflections from a green surface.

given the picture quality I'm not sure we would have noticed the depth of reflections, sometimes it was hard enough to see the cars in the 'snow storm' Laughing

You might not notice, but that doesn't mean the folks behind the camera didn't notice. You have to maintain quality in the process as long as you can so the end product has the best chance of looking decent by the time it gets to your screen at home.

That 61 was about the last gasp for Exner ( who got his crazy ass fired the next year for permanently tanking the Plymouth market for the 62). I like the look but your are in straight hell if you ever have to do body work. Oh, I saw a 75 Road Runner...in my driveway!

So clean I have to share it

I had an '81 1300DX hatchback. 5 years and 85k miles later, I sold it to a co-worker when I bought my '86 Civic Si (which I still have). Honda didn't use galvanized steel until '83, so my tailgate and front inner fenders were already rusting out. I installed the same J.C. Whitney side moldings as the wagon has.

In 20 years the purists will be arguing whether '80-'81 Civics came with silver-painted bands at the top and bottom of the grille. They faded so fast, I had to repaint mine every year.

Thanks for all the info on the red and white 'police' car.

I had no clue that red could be used to show as black with b&w film. Just never crossed my mind.

I do remember in the late 1960s that real NYC police cars had dark green bodies and a white roof, but the front fenders were black.

It could be from a vintage Harley... or an old air cooled VW. Wink

It was at the Village.

The Model T's at Greenfield Village average 10k miles a year from April to January. Vintage bikes only get 6 days on the village streets a year.

I saw an early 50s Hudson Hornet in pristine condition this afternoon. Hudsons dominated the oval circuits in the early 50s and they did it with flathead sixes.

It's actually a VW Saveiro single cab, "Robust" is the "utilitarian" trim level.

With a magical device called a colour filter , at the price of 0.5-1 stop, you can make any colour the tone you want. Common in the BW movie era

I hope this is a result of them being offered for sale in North America!

And with a diesel in them like the rest of the world gets to buy! I know! It will never happen here, we shoot ourselves in the foot when it comes to common sense.

The plate was from Mexico, probably visiting.

I was thinking that too.
I have a large pic but didn't want to show too much of their house and other stuff since I was just riding by on my bike
