Did the original tail lights ever come with chrome or were they just plain metal?

Define North American Spec. There’s two I can think of. And I’m not talking federal and California US specs. Wink

Andrewcrocco, are you shopping for tail lights?

Just plain cast metal, with kind of a satin finish. Even the love bug edition like mine that has all black trim otherwise was the same way, the only trim on the car that wasn’t black.

4 bulbs vs. 3 bulbs. I don't remember any other setup for the elephant's foot. there are variations among the two, of course.

I was goofing with you. Mexico is in North America. I believe some of the Mexican VW taillights are different then The German VW tail lights from spec to US and Canada. I believe you noted the difference above but I didn’t know if Mexican lights ever had chrome.

Thanks for all the replies, I have original pot metal as well as the Mexican black plastics. I was just surprised no one had made a chrome version as every other piece of trim on the car is chrome.

Mexico initially used 4-bulbs and only later switched to 3-bulbs, so it would still be North American type first, rest of the world later Wink

The first was Germany with 4 bulbs. Then there was Mexico with 4 bulbs. Then Mexico 3 bulbs. The latest version is 3 bulbs universal bases and lights which I stock. These have the black plastic on them. They came in clear and smoke.

The universal lenses will fit onto the other bases but they fit very tight. I don't know if that was ever supported but I tried it one day with the stock of parts that I carry.

Original German Hella (4 bulb), GRAY plastic surround with stamped metal backing, no chrome, no SILVER paint (may have faded), now BLACK, with genuine lens patina.

NOS Mexican Hella (4 bulb), GRAY plastic surround and backing, no chrome, no SILVER paint (never had it), still NIB.
