Replacing the flasher on a 56

Has anybody replaced the flasher on a 6v bug with a generic 535 flasher?
It's a 3 term 6volt flasher by Echlin or Ideal.

You can get the stock replacement in rebuilt form for around $50-60.

I have a 535 in my ʻ57- works fine. Uses two of the three terminals. Way cheaper than an original if youʻre not worried too much about having every detail correct.

On my car the wire from the switch and the wire to the bulb in the speedo are tied together on terminal "L" of the 535 and the wire from the fusebox comes in on terminal "X". Terminal "P" isnʻt used. Itʻs been working like that but Iʻm finding a lot of funky wiring (and other) work on this car that I need to look into so I really donʻt know if this is correct. An internal schematic of the 535 could help.

I did some more research into the 535 and discovered that "X" terminal is power in (from the fusebox), "L" is out to the signal lights, and "P" is supposed to light the indicator in the speedometer. According to the schematic I found the "X" to "L" part is thermally operated, but on the new flashers available now the "P" line to the indicator uses a transistor, which may not work in some of our cars. My suspicion is that whoever installed the 535 in my car found the "P" line wouldnʻt power the speedo indicator and therefore wired it in with the "L" line to make the indicator work. So the 535 will work to make the turn signals flash, but the indicator in the speedo may not if wired according to the VW wiring diagram. I may go ahead and try separating the two to see if the "P" circuit will run the indicator. If not I might look for an OG flasher. (if thereʻs one I can afford!).

My car doesn't have semaphores so I don't have any direct experience. The wiring diagram for a '56 (in the technical section here on Samba) shows two switches- one for the turn signals wired to the flasher and a separate one for the semaphores, wired to the indicator lamp in the speedo but not wired to the flasher. Is this correct? I suppose you could wire it to a flasher if you wanted that function...

i figured out where to get the power for the front turn signals through the 535 flasher relays; the left and right powered wires for the semaphores from the switch go right into the trunk behind the instrument panel... i can also use this for the rears, but it appears that the tail lights and the license plate light are all on one circuit getting their power from the 3rd fuse from the left behind the instrument panel which gets powered from the headlight switch on the dash. if i attach the L terminal from the 535 to that fuse i get all the rear lights to blink, obviously not what's intended. i need to look more into the wiring to figure out what can be done... by the way, walmart sells the 535 flasher relays for less than $8.
