Yea, people think if it has a bed it’s a Weekender. Yea I know VW made a Weekender package to be installed. Let’s set the record straight so we all agree on terminology.
If it has a pop top and a rear cabinet and a bed it’s a Weekender or Multivan. If it has a bed and plastic panels or cardboard panels it’s. Passenger van van or Carat with a bed.
Don’t get me going on OE Vs OEM.

I would be surprised if that was factory original Dove Blue Metallic. It looks to me to be a respray with the added bed liner. |

That's too funny. I got into so many conversations about my EuroVan the same way, I just started to keep quiet. Even my signature simply says Westy for past VWs because I got into too many conversations claiming "theirs" (Vanagon or EuroVan) was a Weekender but wasn't, or mine was a Camper but wasn't. What made my conversations more difficult is VW put MV on the back regardless if it had a poptop and cabinet or not. Oh well, I feel your pain ... _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

I know very little about vanagon westys, I have a split westy and thinking of upgrading. Is it uncommon to have working ac? I like that this westy is under 150k miles.

The A/C in our '87 was complete but blew hot when we got it in '06. I used a $40 R134 conversion kit from the FLAPS and that worked but I need to top off yearly so the system obviously needs attention, but with a fresh charge it's good enough for a long hot summer. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

don't let milage scare you. you want the cleanest body you can afford. if you thought rust work on a spilt sucked, a vanagon is 30x worse the way every panel intersects with another.
also, early a/c units are reportedly 'better' than that late ones. I don't know that as fact, but that is what I hear. they are fairly easy to rehab, a bit spendy if you have a shop do it but 100% worth it
don't be afraid of an automatic either. i thought i was going to hate mine and actually really like it.
i have owned a split/bay/now vanagon. i wish i got the vanagon years ago. it is amazing how much more space there is vs a bay or a split _________________

skills@eurocarsplus, please tell me how a vanagon can achieve high mileage vs any other vehicle in its year/type. For example my daily is an 85 Nissan mini truck 1 family owned across the country. I’m just over 100k and I know that dreadful day nears. Do vanagon owners say to themselves hey 100k I just broke in the engine? What is the secret to vanagon longevity? And if possible can you also explain how a vanagon can get high mileage like 200k and still sell for nearly what it sold new? Looking at your comment it’s all about the body. I see it is very complicated with layers of cavities. I do enjoy the simplicity of the split. I do not need special tools but creature comfort is limited.

Dreadful day? Dude, in my experience that day is a loooong way off. This is a snap of my '85 Nissan's dash from a day about 25 years ago. The truck was still on its original clutch at that time.

hammered at 26.5.
I expected more. maybe the non-working fridge and cruise scared people?
I've seen a lot worse vans sell for that or more. Maybe the seller wasn't engaged enough. |

well, age is one thing and the other is people tend to drive the hell out of them, thus racking up the miles
campers are a weird split, some were used just as campers and not daily drivers so the mileage can be low, OR they had the wheels driven off of them
my 84 had 115k when i got it a few years ago. lets say it was 36 years old when i got it. doing the math, that is about 3200 miles/year for it's age.

sure. it's the same reason why every split filled with body filler and poor work sells for what they sell for... people want them.
the only reason i own a vanagon is because i stole it. i bought it for less than a pair of high end dual port heads BUT i shoveled a TON of time/money into it.
i couldn't justify the entry fee of these only to have to do the required work to my standards anyway, so I held out.
here is the build thread if you want to see what i went thru.

Everyone thinks stuff goes for big money on BAT because of the outliers
The average vehicle sells for less than its worth
Confirmation bias and optimism keeps new sellers rolling in. |
