Anyone up for a quiz?
So working on saving my 1600 from the scrapper and my wallet.
Engine was torn down after a seize. New pistons/rods. Got her running but few oil leaks and some rattling with load.
Torn down again and this is what I find on 3&4.
First question/guesses is this normal oil seepage that’s just not being burnt off?
Secondly, what next?
Put it all back together and adjust timing? I’ve heard something about trouble with #3….
I noticed some oil leaking from the unsealed jugs.
If you only had the following what would you use?

That looks OK.

Oil leaks like that aren't 'normal'. The cylinders need to be sealed to the case.

With the standard oil cooler setup that you have, #3 will tend to run a little hotter than the rest. Make sure the valves are always adjusted to spec. Switching to a 'doghouse' oil cooler and accompanying tin will eliminate the issue.

None of it.

I would go buy some black Permatex RTV to seal the case-jug surface. |
Yes, the high-temp stuff works great for sealing the cylinders to the case. Just make sure the surfaces are perfectly clean before applying it. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

Appreciate everyone’s replies!
Went with the Gasgacinch and will post if leaks return, put tape on the bolt threads but thinking the Gasgacinch would be fine there as well.
That #3 is a trouble maker (PO dropped a valve and that’s how I got it 20 hrs ago) so good to know there is a prudent modification rcooled. But the seepage I was referring to was the oil getting past the rings and not being burnt off. First thought was timing but know I need to invest in a compression gauge to rule that out, no brainer when going the rebuild route.
Side note the rings were positioned at 10&2 for the leaker and 7&4 for the dry |
