I decided that I wanted dual fan belts on my Trail Rail. The engine is a Ford 2.8 so the belts would be for a water pump and the alternator. Finding a dual groove pulley for a Ford 2.8 Cologne engine turned to be more trouble than it was worth so I made my own!
I had a piece of round scrap aluminum that was close to the right size so I used that. The original single groove pulley is held onto a kind of hub with four bolts. The hub is on the end of the crank. I transferred the hole pattern onto the Aluminum blank and drilled it. Then I chucked the Aluminum blank in it and cut one side to match the face of the original pulley but slightly longer so that it stands off of the original by about 20 thousands. That's because on the original... the outer part of the pulley with the groove in it, is on the outside of the rubber center of the Harmonic Balancer. The new second groove addition, is attached to the inside of the Harmonic Balancer. The Balancer has to be able to move to balance so I set mine up so "never the Tain will meet". Then I bolted the two sections together after smearing them with JB Weld. They stayed bolted for the duration of the machining. Since I cut it by clamping the original in the lathe jaws, I'm positive it's centered on the original.
Yeah, it's an old Smithy but it's accurate enough to suit me.
Cutting the groove.
Some finishing cuts.
Installed! Except I didn't like it. There was to much flat surface on that pulley so I pulled it off and cut grooves in the face of it. I don't have a photo of it yet.
My argument to justify it, was that it's more reliable and less prone to strand me. Very true but the real reason, is just because it looks cool! |
