Hello
I have restored my generator and I'm lost with what I remember about shim size, thickness etc.
From what I remember the correct way is what I'm showing on my picture but vw diagram doesn't mean same and it's also missing the nut side.
Can you help?

Thanks
It helps a bit, from what I understand the fan lock washer is the one with lip/wing that should go away from the fan as on my picture, right?
For the rest it's not really clear 😬

hopefully this will help you, there seems to be uncertainty due to vague naming of the respective parts. I think that you have the order right but have somehow ended up with two 'wave washers'. If it were me I would favour the one on the left (mostly flat but with two bent edges) as this is the one shown on the cross section from bently. see also the run through from pre67vw - https://1967beetle.com/cool/ - seems comprehensive and has some good tips

Just went through my assortment of Bentley manuals. The 53-57 manual had no specification I could find, but I may have skimmed over it. There also is no diagram for any of those components. There is a picture of a fan in the Electrical section but it is not clear on what is what and does not even show the fan. Odd.

In the late model book, I found what Ovally posted up. I was hoping the Oval book had the same diagram and spec, but nope!

I would use that diagram and spec above.

I wonder who deleted the topic with my posts and photo in the Oval Window 53-57 forum. Sad
What I wrote was the correct answer and can be found in the Dutch-language VW repair manual from the 1950s.
Exactly the same assembly as found on my 25hp engine / early Oval October 1953.

Regards.

That's weird, I remember seeing both topics.
Maybe palmgreen asked for the duplicate it to be removed since it was answered?

If you have the information, feel free to post it in this thread for future reference.

I photographed mine when I had it apart to aid reassembly - maybe these will help

Thicker one outermost.

Fan side had just one thick washer between nut and fan.

Torque the big nut to 40 odd foot pounds.

Thank you 👍
You have same washer ( flat) under nut and under fan?

VW repair manual and spare parts from the 1950s.
Exactly what I found on my 25hp engine when I rebuilt the engine for the first time.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

10 = nut VW 111 119 141A
9 = lock washer (with two bent edges) VW 111 119 135
7 = flat thrust washer VW 111 119 131
8 = shims (3 pieces) VW 111 119 133B
6 = hub VW 111 119 123A

Gap between the fan and backplate should be 1,5 - 1,8 mm
If the gap is wrong remove or add shims on the hub(6) as necessary.
Spare shims should be kept behind the lock washer(9) of the main shaft nut(10).
Correct torque nut is 43lb/ft or 6mkg.
These are VW data, it couldn't be clearer!

Regards.
