side to side feels like a stuffed bearing . Spin the wheel approximately 180 degrees and there’s no sideway movement |

It was a used gearbox and the the play was first picked up when I went for compliance |

Bent drum or bent wheel? Compare parts from one side to the other, or pay a mechanic if you cant. Maybe explain the compliance check and what they found or told you. |

If you have a Bus Boys style straight axle kit, the axle tube where it mounts to the spring plate has three bolts that can come loose over time, and need to be re-torqued every so often. Check here, also another one in front of the axle:

Hi wish it was that simple but I think it’s in the gearbox |

Might be a long shot, try swapping drums side for side, correctly torqued, to see if it changes. Check for worn splines in the drum too. _________________ Tim |

Do you know what the fulcrum plates are? They are inside the sides where the axle goes in. If one or both fulcrum plates are out of location the axle will behave as you describe. |

It can be a problem trying to diagnose and fix problems with modified buses. Since it sounds like you didn't install the mods, it can be a real research project to figure it out. Unless you get a "blueprint" listing of all the components and their installation details, you're kind of on your own.
I bought an IRS modified lowered bus and was getting in and out drum play even though the axle nuts were torqued down. Turns out it needed spacers between the bearing face and inner drum to get the drums properly tensioned on the splines. The spacers which came installed were too thin. Had to have proper thickness spacers machined, as there's no stock spacer made for mounting Thing drums on an IRS modified bus. Oh, and the Thing drums had to have the snout machined down to match the spline length. Another custom item which I couldn't buy anywhere. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Yes I’m thinking this is the problem after speaking to a mechanic who come across this problem |
