an option is to fit a weather guard https://www2.cip1.com/acc-c10-3145/

pretty certain that rain trays were not fitted as not enough clearance.

the engine and carb need those vents - trust the vw engineers, if they were not necessary they wouldn't be there.

Oh yea I understand that. The amount of airflow would be restricted I know, tough it would just depend on the Volume of air being sucked into the compartment from vacuum.

I have been searching for other alternatives to the age old unappealing vent cover, and I think I have found a fun alternative that should, if the angles work out well, prevent water and debris from as easily entering the engine compartment.

Might give a sort of fun, Porsche look as well.

In COTC (87 edition, page 728) JTG says that 68 1200s continued to use 67 decklids. along with 58-63 license plate lamp. But reference pics I've seen as well as the parts book don't support that at all. Just and error from Garwood?

IMO you're correct. My uncle had a 68 1200cc Beetle and it's lid was the standard 68-69 lid with the same license light housing as all the other 1500 Beetles.
