I just got my 1971 Bug, and while we are still debating the final body outcome, I wanted to pose the question of the wood panelling on the outside of the bug. I was considerring a wood panel and wood running boards. Daily driver. Can it be done? Has it been done? I did try a search under body and paint and did not find what I was looking for, but please, if I have missed it, bring it to my attention! Very Happy Thanks in advance

It can be done and i'm sure it has been done.

But WHY?

Hey... whatever floats your boat.

I have been told that I have a taste for things that are, well, to be blunt, butt ugly. Embarassed Dunno why, just a thought. Laughing
I am 98% sure that the original color was Clemintine Orange (I was told by the previous owner as well as it being the color under the headliner) But she's in cruddy shape body-wise. Would it make more sense to have fun with this baby as a daily driver (ie the "woody" idea) or take her back to that clemintine shine? I also was thinking of ivory/white with nice shiny running boards, with red accented interior.
I appreciate all input/opinions. Thanks! Very Happy

Where would I be able to find info on doing that sort of thing? I wouldn't do the bed in the back, just a panel on the sides if I do it. Do ya'll know of any videos/sites or the like?
Thanks, I like the pic Smile

Looks like a cross between a bug and a Morris Traveler.

Try www.google.com

Maybe someone who did it documented how they did it.

All I have found is a guy that is blogging his van, and the only wood is interior. I did find a "steampunk" looking van, with wood floors (over metal) and it looked nice on the interior. I wasn't a huge fan of the spray painted copper bumpers and the like. I'm seriously thinking of having body/paint fun on the van (1971, not currently running) rather then the bug. I found some pics of that Clemintine orange on a sedan in NY (a guy named Chris that restores VW Bugs) and it looks sharp. I'm not big on the grey/black interior. Where does one find the chassis number? Do I have to order Clemintine orange directly from wolfsburg?

If I were going to do this, I'd use Door skins.. These are used to reface interior doors, often there oak, birch or albert and Les than a 1/8" thick, but still ply.. The problem maybe this. There only 42' x 7'

or .. The cabinet refacing material, not sure of the name of that stuff. It's sticky backed and comes in fairly large sheets. This would hold up to weather much longer.

There are 2 yahoo groups - you must join them http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/vwoodies2/
and
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/vwoodies/

Also - do some digging on woodies - There are plans available for doing the conversion to a full VW woodie, but you could just use the parts that you want. I was trying to find the link for the plans, but couldn't The company is named Stevenson. Basically, you can skin the metal body, but the curved rear portion of the car can be tough. Do some searching - its been done on a bunch of different levels. Some came out better than others.

That Woodie truck conversion is just great! I can see it lowered on stock wheels, maybe white walls, a sort of "old school" hot rod.

Just wondering if anyone has found anything about wood paneling, or if you have "woodied" your bug.

I am at least half way interested, probably more than half way interested, in doing that to one of mine...

I also have a bug truck, as soon as I get it on the road, I will try to get some pictures of it posted.

I think either one would look very cool as a woodie...

Faux wood grain on furniture was all the rage in the 69’s and 70’s. I guess you can do it easily on a car too with some off car practice.

You paint the car with one colour and let it dry. Then paint on the contrasting colour and drag the special tool over the surface to create the wood grain.

It works for house paints ok but not sure about car paint. You might have to use a house paint and then clear coat it to protect it.

Google “Wood Grain Effect with Stain and a Wood Grain Tool - Fake Wood Effect Chalk Paint”.

MacTac was a thing when I was a kid, we had a walnut woodgrain refrigerator for a decade, and a kitchen table to match. You could buy the stuff in all sorts of patterns, I guess it was the 70's version of a vinyl wrap. Laughing
