1600 single port running Weber 34 ICTs in a 65 type 1. The existing oil pressure relief valve is the stock (regular) plunger. My Bentley book and John Muir say I can "upgrade" to the slotted 1500S (311415411) plunger. Is this a bad idea? Wasted money? Moot point?

Does not matter if you have a single port or dual port. What matters is if you have a single or dual relief engine case.

Good job on the search!! Then no, you do not want to use the slotted relief valve on a dual relief.

No problem!

More good info here:

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=663402&highlight=grooved+relief+valve

Better to check that the relief springs are correct lengths and pressures.

Plus have:

1. All the stock engine tins and seals in place.

2. Dog house cooler, DH bigger fan and pulley.
