Needed to reinforce the trans a bit, decided to give it my best before plunking down a 100.00 bucks and waiting a week.
I should've took more pics but I was in the zone and only took a few.
The rear strap was already on but it had a few problems that needed fixing as well.

The reason I use the straps, is that I've repaired a few yokes over the decades that had cracked around a welded on bolt like yours, or a drilled through with long bolt as EMPI provides in the kit. My 1st Baja, my '65, I did the long through bolt. Then when the yokes broke (clean OFF...BOTH of 'em!) that was the straw that broke the camel's back for that Bug. _________________ Richard

In my defense Dusty I would've made it more like yours if I had seen it before I finished . . . LOL
Plus I was not gonna take out that trany again if I didn't have to.
I realized that is the weak link on mine, I'll be keeping an eye on it for sure. |

Picked up a pile of bumpers, 2 front and 2 rear.
One front is good to go but for the rear I'll have to figure out what works best.
Kinda got a rough idea already.
I'll get this top loop in and work my way down.
And yes I will sleeve the extensions on the top loop.

Some 1/4 spacers around the ribbing.
Drilled and tapped the spacer part so removal isn't a two man operation.
Its all Franklinstein rn but after a good sanding and paint it should look presentable.

I managed to scrounge up a full set of rims, really do the old school look.
I had some 8" wide for the back but didn't like how heavy they were and the offset was awful.
These are all 15x5s. pretty close to zero offset on the 5s
What do you guys think??? |

Im getting sidetracked again, I gotta finish up the rear bumper cage first, then I can move the license plate from the fender to the bumper, then I can trim the rear fenders. LOL
I know it looks koo koo crazy right now but it should look nice when finished up. |

When I first got it home I was full speed ahead, about 8 hours a day.
It has tapered off since I got it running and driving, but on average I would guess 4 hours a day. Some days 6 and some days zero...LOL
Today was about an hour, I just milled the 2 sections for the rear cage and I was done.
Back has been acting up again so I avoided anything very strenuous today. |

Got at it early this morning, by 12:00 it was blazing outside!
Wire wheeled most of the old paint then tacked it all together, I ran into a clearance issue with the muffler but worked around it.
Worst case scenario I will relocate the muffler.
Even recycled some light tabs . . Im gonna get my money's worth outta that pile of bumpers . . . LOL

Just because I own a welder doesn't make me a welder, I had my friend Angelica finish up the cage for me.
I can admit she's better at it than I am. Give her a follow on IG

As payment.
I don't mean this in a dirty fashion. In case someone gets a bad idea in their head.
Buy her a pair of Carhartt britches with insertible knee pads. She'll be glad you did.
As we get older. Some of us regret not taking care of our knees.
BTW. I have been watching and reading along on this cool "Old School" Baja rebirth. Nice work here! _________________ I have learned over the years.

Finally getting somewhere with this thing, still need to relocate the lights and oil filter but I've got other stuff I wanna get to first.
I think trimming up the rear fenders is next on the list.

Doing some clean up on these old rims.
Been going back and forth about what direction to go as far as paint or not to paint.
It was either Black, grey or the OG white.
Finally decided to stick with the OG white so 2 I cleaned up as best I could and they still have a little bit of the pin stripping left, another one I picked up is practically brand new and the forth one is faded pretty bad and is not an exact match to the other 3 so that one I'll paint to match the newest looking one.
I'll get some more pics later today. |

Nothing really spectacular going on this weekend, hot as hell out but did a few things.
Trimmed up the rear fenders.
And since I moved the driving light to the nose the side light brackets I made had nothing to do so I ordered a set of low budget empi lights and found some cool covers on craigslist for 10 bucks.
Warning these lights needed some work to get them to mount solid and the little strip of chrome wire cover is so short its worthless.
Still need to wire em up.
