I looked at a 57 low light and wanted to match the vin # on the plate to the one on the pan below the rear seat. There is absolutely zero stamping on the pan, nor is there the indentation where the # would go. The whole thing is smooth. Please help

I think you have to remove the cover over the shift coupler to find the #.

From the APR59 Ghia owner's manual:

So if no VIN there, you probably have a VW dealer replacement pan.

Is there any reason for a replacement pan? The car has always been in Ca and has zero rust. Having said that, how do you register the thing as there’s no stamped vin on the pan/frame?

Lots of reasons, all of them of some type of crash that did not involve the body. EG, hit a low curb and bent up the front suspension and frame head. Plus if one is not planning to sell a car it probably is not going to be a problem to have a blank chassi.

Lots of states USED to register vehicles by the engine number, not the chassi VIN.

Most likely the chassis on your car is from another car. There is no reason to grind off the VIN unless there is something to hide such as its a stolen chassis or the does want the buyer to know that the chassis and body do not match.

Acid can be used to recover a ground off chassi number. Thing is if someone wants to change a chassi number, it is super easy to cut out that area then weld in another chassi number. Then it would be much less questionable by law enforcement.

It’s illegal to alter or remove a VIN on a vehicle but there are some exceptions such as in collision repairs in that areas where the VIN is stamped or the body VIN plate. Some unscrupulous sellers restamp them. I believe that with the proper documents DMV can assign a new number.
