Now on the WTF question, what is the tow rig there? Looks like a dedicated thing. |
The small truck behind the Beetle is another Hanomag product with limited production- a '47 thru '50 ST-20. It was a continuation of the late '30's/early '40's SS-20. SS stood for Schnell Schlepper, quick tow-er. 1.9 liter 4-cylinder 20 hp diesel engine. The wheelbase was approx. 1/3 shorter than a Beetle's (1935 mm vs 2400 mm).

That is a great name! I wonder what "Slow Tow" would be? That seems more like it. _________________ nothing |

well done Rome, it did occur to me that it could be a hanomag as the photo is probably near their factory but I ran out of search time.
while we're on mystery trucks, is this a german ford in bluebaron's photo?

The Opel Manta in Europe, it was renamed the 1900 Rallye when sold in the USA through Buick dealers. It actually was a better sports car than the "2/3-Corvette" Opel GT, which shared the engine. This looks to be a '72 model probably. |
I remember it as the Opel Manta here in the States (well, Brooklyn, anyway).
The bumpers tell me it's a '73 or later (unless Opel was ahead of the regulations). _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”

Actually, I feel it is the other way around. VW was just behind Honda in 1974, which was an improvement on the Austin/Morris Mini after about a dozen years, and then everyone eventually fell in behind them with transverse engines and front wheel drive.
But yeah, much later on everything became so homogenized it's hard to tell one car/truck from another. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Id say then with the Passat, Early Golf derivatives of the time. VW gets credit all the time for shifting away from ACVW platform to the water coolers at this time. Saved the company some lit says. _________________

49-54 Chevy, probably post 51 with that grille. I don't know the specifics, but I gotta be close on this one. Looks like it might be one ton, also. _________________ nothing |

Beech trees have smooth bark.
My bet is yellow birch , although the leaves look rather large. _________________ "Albatross"! |

Bark looks mostly smooth with some warts and ridges to me in the fuzzy picture. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

I just one cut into firewood last month. Not all birch trees are white and smooth looking. Often the old trunk gets very grey and rough. Those leaves look exactly like any other birch tree.
The leaves are also reminiscent of an Elm tree. Maybe some species of Elm? _________________ nothing |
