I am working on getting my engine mounted to a stand and just purchased a Harbor Freight stand (image below). Can I mount the engine directly to the yoke provided with the stand (see pic) or am I going to need to get a VW specific yoke?

Then drill a hole for a pin or tap for a bolt to stop. That's what I did.

The tiny mounting points would put an awful amount of pressure on a mag case.

I bought the 3 arm yoke from the guy here on Samba and used the HF stand.

Yeah that's the guy. You linked to his 4 arm. I have the same 3 arm like you Rust.

The 3 arm is very stout. You could hold up a truck with the 4 arm I bet.

I use a Harbor Freight stand and an VW specific, 2 arm, Yoke. Got the Yoke from Pierside Parts. Drilled 4 holes into the pivot sleeve so a pin could hold the Yoke where I wanted it. Works pretty keen!

Here is the link to the Yoke. $60.00

I also welded a glad nut to the opposite end of the yoke to assemble crankshafts easily.

Exactly what I did with the yoke from AA.

I did it without the special yoke. I adapted it somehow (2 x 4s?) and I had no idea what I was doing. It worked out, but....

Buy the VW yoke. Do it right.

I use a bench mount stand, has served me well since the 1970s.

The best setup I have seen use the 2 leg stand from Summit, the 2 or 3 arm head and a hydraulic lift table from HF . Not cheap but the easiest and safest way to transfer the motor around to all its temporary homes.

This is the one I have. Buy it from TheSamba advertisers.

If you don't have a need for more than the 2 arm don't buy it. The 2 arm allows more maneuverability. For instance, I can attach my starting adapter and the 2 arm yoke at the same time.

What makes the VW specific mounts better than the stock HF one? It looks like they all use the same mounting holes. Is there some other support I didn't see? Thanks.

The engine case has a 360* raised ridge that interferes with normal engine stand mounting sleeves

Be careful. These engine stand will fall over if you fart downwind. Joking but not joking.
