Not sure TheSamba is HIPPA-compliant, but you're secret's safe w/me. I use the long sleeves to avoid becoming smeared in oil and grime, and the occasional cut from some random sharp edge. Well, carry-on, Super's looking great.

LOL if you saw my purple smurf arms on the week after doing alot of mechanical work on the car you'd realize its absolutely not a secret to anyone re: blood thinners.

That canvas is so tight. I've got the top latched to try and stretch it out this week and hopefully next weekend can put the four finish screws in that attach it to the rear quarter panel and frame there. then the rear window itself, the carpet and seats and Lt. Dan will be driven almost daily.

I'm lucky my office landlord built a private garage at my office location and he lets me park there. So don't have to worry about rain, thieves or idiots who like to slash vert tops there.

was not at all happy with the fit of the canvas top. There was extra fabric hanging off the rear (that needs to be trimmed off before you install) and you could see the side of the frame. Something wasn't right. I removed and re-installed it and it fits better now. Need to add a finish screw at the bottom left to take out that wrinkle. Also learned its best not to clamp the front down until you have made some cuts for the rear window to release some tension there. Work is proceeding at a snails pace. just a few hours a week but slowly slowly.

I have the Gilmore A/C and spoke with the great guys at Gilmore as well as the engine builder about an issue. When at idle and the air con is turned on the car will stall. Gilmore feels a lightened flywheel and big intake ports on a high performance engine is the issue. They suggested a solenoid on the carb to kick up the idle when the compressor is engaged. Engine builder suggested instead to use an RPM switch to cut off the compressor until RPM can keep things going. Maybe 1500-2000rpm. Of course than may lead to sweaty red lights. But it is clearly the easier solution. Will work on this and post pics of the final fix for the above. Interested in any input on this stalling problem and solutions others used. The Gilmore compressor is only 2hp so hard to understand how it can stall a big beefy motor but apparently this is a thing.

Also considering removing the rear sway bar. I believe it really harshens the ride and adds a lot of clunking sounds in the back. It also requires relocating the ac condenser about 1.5-2” lower on an already lowered car. Most people with respect on the samba say they aren’t needed and this is not a track car anyway. Welcome any thoughts on this subject.

Would the RPM switch be automatic? Man, having to cut off the AC at red lights in bOrlando in 9/12 months of the year is no laughing matter!! Perhaps an RPM switch to increase RPMs at idle...? I have *no idea* how that would work w/a center mount carb...or any carb for that matter...!

Yes. Summit racing has automatic rpm switches. At any rpm can ground a lead and trigger a normally open relay to close sending power to the compressor clutch.

Aircon issue resolved. Not ideal but workable. RPM controlled switch from summit racing triggers a relay that send power to the compressor. When at idle the compressor will disengage. But at 1700 it will re engage. So it’s operable just about anytime you’re not idling at a stop light.

took a day off and decided to cut in the rear window.

first put the last two finish screws that hold the canvas to the vert. frame:

staple the canvas to the wood ring then trim the canvas:

add finish screws to headliner and pull taught and snag the headliner onto the two sharp prongs to take all the wrinkles out (must do this before glueing and stapling headliner to window ring:

put painters tape down to avoid getting glue on canvas then glue the inner edge of the ring and the headliner, attach staple and trim:

ready for rear window:'

I disrecommend 3m 90 spray glue for this job. the 74 seems to hold much better:

Top side seals in on drivers side.

By the way this type of ratcheting closed end wrench is a must for tightening the rear cable.

The window seals on verts have 6 special end pieces. On on the back edge of each door window opening and one each on the front and back edge of the quarter window opening. Chucks convertibles has a kit of the screws and washers but it’s out of stock. I found stainless washers at bel metric that fit perfect. They are also flat and filled on the back so they won’t cut into the rubber.

EUREKA!

I have those rubber parts on my ‘79 and they won’t stay put. I didn’t know my screws were missing. Thanks so much for sharing this.

The screws are available from chucks- I had an extra bag of screws used to hold the top rubber seals on. But those washers were a good find. I lost one of those rubber seals on the road somehow. The screw head was not big enough to secure it in place.

Anyone have very good pics or a link to this gizmo that latches the rear seat in place? Mine doesn’t seem to lock properly and the spring action isn’t working properly.

Pics are for a sedan showing the disassembly sequence.
Not sure if the convertible is the same.
Note the pin (slotted spring pin) and the plastic washer on the passenger side.
Install the pin after preloading the return spring.
Hope this helps.

Thank you!

That should be helpful. The spring is under no tension at all. I suppose the end opposite the little hook that catches the lin could be broken or adrift from its proper anchoring.

kind of at an impasse here. that rear seatback latch not working. I need to search for more pictures. wondering if the spring is one side or both sides. I feel like the spring I have if used on the divers side end will force the little L shaped rod up not down to lock it in place. should the spring be on the passenger side?

EDIT: found this epic thread that completely explains with close up photos how to put this damn spring in. Also I had the L shaped piece pointing the wrong way. So no need to reply re this issue: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8553568&highlight=#8553568

Cannot for the life of me get the rear window in. Have done this before successfully but my help and I just got exhausted in the 95 degree heat trying this. I posted in the convertible beetle facebook page. got many suggestions as outlined here:

1. use a WCM seal, they go in easier (I'm trying with a chucks seal now but believe I have WCM seal lying around.
2. trim down some of the inside the seal rubber flaps to facilitate insertion but then will need some silicone sealer to make it water tight
3. use a thicker line like clothes line not weed wacker line
4. start the strings at the middle top not bottom, pull both strings at the same time until reaching the top corners then do one side alternating with the other after that
5. Use KY jelly as lube (I was using dry silicone spray)

I feel like I need a third person. When one side begins to seat and I pull the cord on the other, that second side seats while the first side unseats. If I had a third person to maintain pressure on the first side I think I could seat the second side.

Ok thats all my suggested tips. Anything else?

Meanwhile put the rear floor carpets in so as not to waste the day.
