Here's another one of my builds that came back home. It's an AMT Lug Bug in 1/25 scale. It was one of three AMT shorties, Der Beetle Bus,
Lug Bug and Der Volks Van. Each one had a different roof, to build bus, pickup or panel van versions.

These bus kits feature a Hemi Chrysler engine mounted amidships! This one also came with many accessories, such as mirrors, running lights, faux
wooden bumper, scoops and wild decals. In this instance, I decided less was more, so I went with Testor's purple paint, and left off all the extras,
for more of a clean streetrod look. The bus is already radical enough without loading it up with more stuff!

My latest project is this 1939 Kűbelwagen prototype. It is based on the Tamiya 1:16 Type 82 Kűbelwagen kit. This is my first attempt at weathering, btw.

It may look a little different to those who have built Kűbelwagens before. That’s because this is a predecessor to the production version. There were only two built in this configuration.

The first Type 82 Kűbelwagen prototype was hand-built and finished early November 1939 using the chassis VW38/20. The chassis was re-stamped with a new number 82/1. The car wore the temporary Stuttgart plate IIIA-0685. It was thoroughly tested by the Porsche team around Stuttgart and photographed with the purpose to be shown off to the military. When I set out to build this model, my intention was to capture all of the specific pre-production details to the best of my ability. Below is a list off all the changes and/or scratch built parts I had to apply to this build. I also applied some weathering to it to replicate a well worn and dirty/dusty vehicle however avoiding rust as it would have been still a new car.

The mods are:
Slight downwards extension to the nose to fit the new skid plate.
Number plate made up from actual photograph of the original car.
Modified tow hooks
New built front skid plate to 1939 specs.
New extended ribs under the spare wheel.
Relocated blackout light location.
Relocated fuel filler to the right side panel.
Only one windscreen clip in the middle of the top panel.
Dimples in the front top panel for windscreen wipers.
New shape mounting bases for the headlights.
Headlight blackout covers drilled out and new lenses made.
Windscreen frame modified with new location for wipers.
New wipers made out of steel wire, aluminium and plastic.
New semaphore pockets and semaphores – attached to the sides of windscreen.
Relocated horn to right side panel and a new mounting bracket made.
Rear view mirror modified with new mounting hardware made of brass tubing and pin.
New spot light made with mounting hardware made of brass tubing, located on the right side windscreen hinge.
Shovel bracket relocated to the right side with shovel removed and mounting point removed from left side.
Strengthening triangles removed from front fenders at the back.
Filled-in jacking point holes in the lower sill panels.
Dashboard enhanced with separate new dash pod imitating Bakelite and coloured indicator lights, all knobs separately re-cast in white, electric socket made of brass tubing.
New steering wheel made to 1938/39 specifications.
New gear shifter made of steel wire and plastic ball.
New battery made for under the rear seat.
New roof made of lining material and folded in down position. Modified roof folding mechanism re-used.
Rear fenders shortened at the back.
Rear blackout light relocated to the engine lid.
New tail light made for the right side.
New lower rear panel made with modified tow hooks.
Reflectors made for the rear panel.
Engine lid modified with a hinge so it can be opened and closed and a lid prop made.
Engine lid locking mechanisms made.
Blank number plate made with a temporary plate installed over it.
New firewall in the engine bay.
Sides of the engine bay modified with some molded-in details removed.
Air-filter modified.
Added fuel lines, spark plug wires and vehicle type-plate and wiring harness.
New rear skid plate made and installed over engine/transmission.
Five new hubcaps made for the wheels.

Wow, what a great companion piece to your wooden remake of the early Beetle prototype model. The photography is top-flight as well.

Finster - thanks for the photo. I was looking for it. I remember seeing it someplace but could no longer locate. I'd love for someone to come up with a Type 62 kit. That would be great.

Blue Baron - thanks. Yes, my model collection is constantly growing. I've got some other ideas...

Fish - thanks, it's all in practice. I've learned some great techniques along the way. Lots of help and inspiration is available online these days.

you guys doing some great work! here is my figure for the kubelwagen half track, been decades since i painted a face, had to look back,

my old work = 1st pic is german army dudes, 1:35 scale, going left to right, chrome glasses, very cool, next guy is OK, you can see his eyes, but rest of face is pretty plain, 3rd guy better, 4th guy on right is best, has eyes, and decent shading on his face, not bad for a 15 year old kid's work.

2nd pic, the figure, note he has short sleeve shirt and short pants on, because originally from a north african dessert scene, so i used clay to add sleeves and pants, then coat with super glue, then sprinkle on baking soda, makes a nice hard surface with texture. a good trick to know.

figure, now has on a dirty gray shirt, dark blue slacks, black shoes, he has on the dark red hat, black hair.

i always did black pupils, but i watched some youtube videos and decided to try blue eyes, i think they turned out nice

his face is kinda dark in the front from a couple days of beard growth, plus kinda red from the cold weather + wind burn.

i think he turned out pretty good, not world class, but i am happy with him.

final note, i have him smoking a cigarette, i love the little piece of realism. remember, this is about historical accuracy, EVERYONE smoked in the 1940's. note the tip is glowing orange, so you know he is inhaling.
