Hello-
TDE sells some stock looking tail pipes that are only slightly louder than stock, but much less restrictive.
Has anyone tried a set? If so, are they worth the money?
Thanks,

yes i have some sets on stock exhausts... they are worth the money, sound is a bit louder, but backpressure is improved... had a better feeling on my 1433ccm after changing the pipes & same on my old 57 (riechert 2 carb, low modified heads, custom cam)
also grueni has changed to this set as i know and had a much better feeling on his engine

right...with my blown nearly stock engine the engine changes alot. with supercharger you need a really free breathing exhaust...for sure the stock exhaust isn't..but the changings to the tde endpipes makes the engines feel much much better! i can say the engine was after changing a totally different one.
one day i will sell my abarth and change back to a old stock exhaust with the pipes inside +my tde endpipes. |

I´ve got them too. I had the chance to compare the TDE pipes and some copies - also stainless - at half the price and I still decided to get the TDEs.
They do seem to make an improvement in the breathing. |

And these would pass the guidelines for the Stone Stock (SS) category of 36hp Challengers. Yes, sounds good............

Would these work on a stock 67 bug 1500? _________________ 67 Sun Roof / Born Sept 66 / Second Owner

I need a set 250mm long or 10 7/8 inches. Is there a site to see what the different lengths they come in? _________________ 67 Sun Roof / Born Sept 66 / Second Owner

I don't think anyone in the USA carries these, I've decided to go with them instead of the modern Abarth 4 tip style mufflers, which don't seem to fit or look right anyway and their performance doesn't seem to equal as much as these little pipes indicate from all the Volks I know in Germany who use these, they have nothing but praise for them.
I just received some email from them and they only carry pipes that are 24cm = 9.4 inches, so I'll have to work out a trick to extend the pipes like 1 inch or so, no big deal so that they look like the original Oval window long pipes.

I use them, and cant see any reason to extend them. Looks good. As they are made of stainless steel, they will get a little golden look when they are used/warmed up, not chrome. They have that golden color in oval56's pictures.
And, they make my engine rev a little more (std 36hp) before loosing power. _________________ I got a historic car, every scratch got a history...

Blauchen L331-
Where did you buy them, and how much did they charge for shipping?
Cheers,

Ohh they change color????
Hmm that's not so good, I don't think that's what I want, I already have discolored rusty ones, I want some great shiny chrome to match my bumpers.
I guess I'll just have to shell out the $$$$ for some original 1950's N.O.S. German factory ones that are the correct length for the Ovals.
I don't want peashooters that change colors, for the price they are asking, you'd think that the stainless would hold it's look? But, I have no experience with SS pipes, so I'm glad you mentioned this before I put the $$$ into them.....

Does anyone have close up photos of the discoloration of the pipes?
Kjell do you have any shots of your pipes please? Or do you have anyway to maybe make a video with the sound off a 36hp motor?
Maybe I should keep a more open mind, if they perform as well as most people say?
Blauchen has a healthy motor with low miles and I'd really like to have a distinct sound just a little better than normal.......
Just thinking about the whole idea spending that much money on pipes, (close to $100 including shipping or so?) regardless of the material, they shouldn't be changing colors in a bad way, I suppose if it looks like what chrome does on vintage hot rod headers then that look might be kool with my patina'd car?

Sorry to dig up a super old thread... but since it already existed...
Sounds like the consensus is that the TDE tail pipes are worth it on a 36 horse? I've got an otherwise stock 1192 cc 36er with a WW Okrasa kit. Looking to pick up a few more ponies until I'm able to build a 1400 36er for it.
As another option, aren't the baffles removable form the stock tail pipes? I'd think that would help...
Sorry if these are dumb questions, I'm new to stock motors _________________ Vintage Classic Specialist, Orange, CA

The author of "Souping the Volkswagen" addresses this issue. He states that removing the baffling does decrease back pressure. He also points out that the sound isn't very appealing, and will probably attract a bit too much attention from your local police.
Cheers,

Thanks. I wouldn't have thought it would be that loud. Maybe I'll give it a try some time for shits and giggles.
I sent these guys https://www.baltic-kaefer.de/ an email to ask if they ship to the US, for a pair of TDE tail pipes. If anyone knows a vendor in the US or Canada please let me know. I couldn't find any with a google search. _________________ Vintage Classic Specialist, Orange, CA
