Dear Forum Members,

as I am following this forum already for a while, I wanted to introduce myself.
My Name is Max and while living in San Diego I purchased my 70's Ghia in 1996 as my daily driver. Returning back to Germany in 2000 I took it for a ride across the US for 3 weeks. The car was then shipped from New York to Hamburg and finally ended up south in Bavaria. As it was in pretty good shape, I decided to restore it to its fully beauty, which I am doing since quite some years (due to the lack of sufficient time). Now the project is speeding up as I wanted to get her (yes it is a SHE) back on the road.
So I will ask for sure quite some stupid questions during the next couple of months and years to come, so bear with me and meanwhile enjoy the pics.

Greetings from Bavaria
Max

Welcome to the Samba!
I’m just like you.
I let my Ghia languish in the garage for many years.
Over the past year I’ve done a lot of things to her and I’m close to driving her again. Just need to finish the new engine and re-install the stereo.
But wait! The wife has requested air conditioning.

What? You're painting your Ghia to match the shirt you once wore?

Nice colours, both of them, by the way.

There are no "stupid questions" on this forum. We learn from each other's experiences, and we even learn from our own as well as other members' questions. So fire away.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Yeah your're almost right, almost the same colour, but didn't notice until you mentioned it. This time just a bit more on the warm orange side.
The original red was a bit to much on the brownish side, to what I recall it from the early days 23 years ago, so I decided to go for a more fun tone and to stick a bit out of the traditional colour scheme.

Welcome Max,
I’m curious if there was rust to repair in that Ghia ahead of the respray. If none present it shows you started with a very good car and it’s obvious why you transported it back to Bavaria. Clean cars are uncommon. I’m pleased to see everything removed from the car for the full restoration. It looks like a quality job.

Mine said the same thing...I said we have a convertible, drop the top and I'll drive fast!!!

Max, great looking Ghia. I have been restoring my 71 convertible since 2007 when I went to Afghanistan and Iraq for several years. Don't worry about the "stupid" questions, I've probably asked the majority of them and have many to go as I'm reassembling mine now. Keep up the good work and keep posting your story as you go along. As has been said, we all learn together! Or, "We're All in this Together.

Hi Max,

Eventhough I'm also very new to the Forum, I welcome you too Very Happy
I am in the process of restoring my Ghia (72 to mid 60's design retrofit), and having the painted shell this summer Twisted Evil to start assembly.

Because I'm also from Bayern (85579 Neubiberg, near Munich), it may be helpful (or at least fun Razz ) to keep in touch regarding our projects Wink

Welcome aboard. Some would call that picture of you standing on the hood of your Ghia a criminal offense but I see it as a testament to German engineering. Love the color choice, it gives me an off-center idea for my paint scheme.

Thanks for the appreciation.

@ Vladiiiii : yeah would be great to catch up here in southern Bavaria, I am living at the shores of the Ammersee. Hope I can drop you a PM in the next days.

@ Antoine : Checked your thread. You have really tremendous task ahead of you. My utmost respect, keep up the good work and documentation.

@ sputnick60 : What could you expect of a 50 year old lady? Even if she ever lived in Southern California, time doesn’t pass unnoticed. Of course there were some rusty spots and some dings and dents. But not much, just the usual spots on the wheel housings and on the bottom of the front end where the spare tire is located. The usual stuff. This was fixed before chemically stripping of the paint and etching filler and rust away. After that "Cathodic dip painting“ process (the black bat mobile style picture), it turned out that the rest of the body was almost meticulous. So lucky me and lucky her, the rustcoating is now in every crevice.

@Evil_Fiz : This was just to show that my "back to the Vaterland" tour as I called the road adventure from the west to the east coast came finally to an end. What a great country to experience if you have the chance to do it like that and not just flying over it quickly. And my car did great even on high Rocky mountains passes. As I was alone shooting that picture, it was a task getting on the hood in a matter of 10sec for the selfie timer of the camera.

I’ll keep you posted about the progress. Currently I am looking for the shims of the steering gearbox (worm) and the shim for the adjustment screw of the roller shaft as well as for a circlip. I am in contact with Tim, he might sell me some of his reproduced shims.

All the best
Max

no it is melon yellow "melonengelb" RAL1028.
Not original (bahia red) but I liked it better.
It really sticks out of the grey-white-silver current color scheme of cars.

Beautiful car. The color is perfect for the beautiful styling of the Karmann Ghia. Your restoration was obviously of very high quality. Congratulations on an awesome job.
