I would first check to see if the o-ring seals are in place under each rocker arm. This o-ring(s) is suppose to keep oil from weeping back through the rocker stud thread and out the back of the head near the area shown leaking.
Maybe replace those o-rings if you find them in place. Otherwise the heads may need be removed to be remachined.

Possibly lower head bolts. I put a little sealer on the washers when installing. You may be able to see oil where the head bolts enter the head.

All 4 rocker arm studs are dry

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The 8 lower cylinder studs are dry head & case side

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Case looks dry so I doubt the oil cooler leaks ? 🤔
Only wet place is where cylinder connects to the head on the left side…
right side no oil … yet

I have a theory.. 🤔

Previous i had allot of problems getting the engine started. (Me not knowing how to 😄 and flooding the engine) also starting with a hot engine again flooding…

Could this not be the excess fuel from being flooded pushed out between the head and cilinder ?
Or is this impossible?! I’m No type1 expert 😄

I was thinking something similar if your head bolts are not torqued but I think the sound would be noticeable when starting... The head bolts get tighter as the cylinders heat up so maybe just at very start. You could re torque the head bolts to be sure.

They can drain a little oil into the cylinders when stopped depending on the where the rings are. This usually causes a cloud of blue smoke once in awhile at start.

Thanks for the info 👍🏻
So I removed the rocker shafts on both sides
Retorque the 8 lower head nuts.
They did not budge.. all nice and tight
Not worried about the upper nuts atm
After reinstalling the rockers I checked for valve clearance.
When turning the engine manually !! i could hear the bubling noise (air and presumably fuel) escaping
After 2 rotation drops where falling on the floor !
100% sure now the heads do not seal properly on the cilinders 😕

When i assembled the engine i knew the case was worn,
assuming the old motor had been abused severely.
The case already had a line bore before..
And was worn out again.. not being able to line bore again..
i made the motor out of salvaged parts (Save some money for future repairs on the bus itself) And hoping for the best.
We know how it turned out 🥲

Case, heads, cillinders need to be resurfaced and checked at a machine shop
Case line bore out of spec…
Not worth spending more money on this engine
The case is the foundation of the whole engine

Engine turns nicely, even under load no issues but…
Made the bus look nice so don’t want a greasy engine
And oil everywhere i go

So yeah there go my savings 😆 again
Going all in now, and build me a complete new bottom end 💸
A solid trustworthy 🤞🏻 stock 1600 dualport engine

Allot of shops are out off stock atm, butt got lucky and got ahold of one
Lets hope its a good one 🫣

Front frame needed some modifications for fitting the heater pipe.
Otherwise the ‘Rusty lee rock and roll bed” went in smoothly.

that bench looks really good. i would probably box in the heater log, just so that it doesn't heat up the stuff in your storage box. also keeps shit from sliding out.

Now that I’m building a new engine
Thinking of placing a full flow system
And a spin-on oilfilter

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I assume with a full flow system all the oil is passing through the filter.
With the expectation when it goes trough the relief valve on the pump cover.
Don’t think its a bad idea? Upgrade over the old system.
Better filtration of the engine oil
Or am I wrong and better keeping it original ?

Same goes for the camshaft, crankshaft
No big or almost no price difference for the original or upgraded stuff

Original style crankshaft or a scat volksracer 69mm forged one with counterweights ?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Original camshaft or go for a small upgraded scat one
?? That works with the stock dualport heads, 1600 cylinders and carburator.
On YouTube they say always upgrade your cam when building an engine.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Do not know what cam would fit best for my setup?
Any comments or thoughts ar welcome!!

Or do i keep it all stock ?

fully balancing and blueprinting your driveline is always a great benefit to a boxer engine. That crank, with a balanced flywheel, crank pulley, rods and pistons (even if stock) will enhance your engine longevity and make it smooth. That's where I'd start even with a stock rebuild.

In the buildup of a new engine consider the direction, dependable stock, or more performance. A well thought out 1600 should be quite a step up from the one you have now. If you are considering a counterweighted crank be sure it’s a forged crank for your bus, otherwise you would be better off with a reground stock German 69mm crank.

Consider a filter mount that bolts to the engine. Saves drilling the chassis or tins and no hoses around the exhaust. Is quite hidden so looks stock

I had a look at those before, correct me if I’m wrong
but is this not a bypass system?
Not all the oil goes through the filter? Not a full-flow system
Nice thing about those you don’t need to mess around with the oil hose

My head is already 🤯 and the engine assembly is far from starting ..
Allot of choices to make, which direction I want to go with the build .. what parts do i buy .. how much I want to spend ..
Review on parts, manufacturers 🇺🇸 🇨🇳 🇩🇪 , brands ..
On one forum its all great, the other one its trash ..
What do you buy .. who do you believe 😅

The auto linea case has the opening ready for the full-flow system.
full-flow pump (without the hole drilled on the pressure side) and pump cover with outlet.
I stick with the remote filter (with the hoses 😝)
If wished in the future easy upgrade to extra oil cooler.
Same goes for the camshaft, later on if i would like to get a bit more power ..
whats in the case is good 👍🏻 So don’t need to split her again

After some reading.. YouTube.. some more reading
And mailing I decided to go with an Engle W-100 camshaft and lifters (heavy duty valve springs not sure if necessary?)

This build is unbelievable your attention to detail is off the charts. Don't let anybody approach that bus with a glass of red wine. I was glad to see your better half smiling while she was at the sewing machine. My wife did all of the sewing on an interior for a beetle many years ago. I would love to have that talent but, as I always say, let the professionals handle it. Love your build.
