I’m looking for a cheap rear hatch mounted rack so I can turn it into my jerry can rack. I think any sort of rack that mounts to the rear hatch will do. I’ve looked mostly for bike racks but have only found things over $250. Is that the best I can get or should I keep looking? |

Does something like this begin to fit the bill?
$70 -

Hollywood Racks also offers basic, lower priced racks that may fit the bill
$105

I use the Hollywood Rack with 3 bikes on it. I put an extra strap around the rear hatch hinges to help support the weight. I also put a strap from the bottom of the rack to the trailer hitch to add stability. When I bought the van it came with a 4-bike trailer hitch Thule, I sold it too heavy and stuck out too far for my taste. A bit more work but I prefer how tight the load is and how close it is to the back of the van. _________________ 87 Titian Red Westfalia 2.0 VW I4 SOHC manual Ottawa, Ontario |

I used something similar many times. An old Rhode Gear trunk rack. My only problem was the lower straps coming in lipped from under the hatch - I would use the bumper or bumper brackets instead. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

If you have actual jerry-type cans you probably want to support them from beneath, which the Fiamma would do. Most of the strap-on hatch-mount racks use two prongs that the bikes hang from and these likely would only work for Rotopax-type gas containers, if you feel like buying more new stuff. Those prongs might also let you hang a jerry can but I suspect it could be dicey. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |
