Putting a type 4 back together and would be awesome to run it in my engine test stand that uses a beetle tranny housing. Can it be done? I know swapping the flywheel is not a thing, so can I do it and if so, what starter?

If it bolts up and the flywheel doesn't scrape it should work.

Stock Beetle starter is working just fine for me.

Is it for an automatic? Then no.
Does it have a flywheel for a 914 or 912? Then no.
Does it have a 228mm flywheel? Then I'm not sure but I think with some grinding it will.
Does it have any other VW flywheel? You should be fine.

All VW flywheels will work on a test stand with either a bug or 002/091 bus bellhousing. 200, 210, 215, 228mm, all the same ring gear.

It is the 228mm pressure plate that will get you with a bug bellhousing. It’s big. To fit a 228mm pressure plate in a bug bellhousing you usually need to do a little grinding inside near the starter.

914 flywheels can be used on a bug/bus bellhousing for testing purposes. You just have to shim the starter motor out 6mm or so. This is because the ring gear for the Porsche transmissions is offset further back. To avoid binding the starter gear, simply moving the starter back works well enough.

Thanks all. Worked beautifully. We did have to grind a tiny bit from the lower portion of the bell housing, but that was it. And since this is going in a bus, I could easily tune and once we get a couple things mounted, going in and hopefully going back home this week.
