The mechanics at work dragged these back from a field in Santa Cruz. 16" diameter and 4" wide
|
Those look to be Ford wide 5 wheel from the late 1930's. The 4 inch wide 16 inch diameter version was pretty common too. They where often used on old street rods for some stronger internals. It was my inspiration for running 14 inch stock and widened wide 5 Bus wheels on my Berry Mini-T. |
That makes way more sense. They also dragged back a '49 Mercury and a '30 something Ford roadster. Thanks EV! |

My understanding is that the English Ford wheel is actually an 8 inch bolt pattern, not exactly the same as the VW. The Ford wheel is 203.2mm 5 lug, VW is 205mm 5 lug. I guess users find it fits with 12mm bolts, but not with 14mm ones. IDK, that is 0.035 inch off each hole.
The late '30's Ford pattern was 5 by 10-1/4 inches. These wide patterns where popular in the late '30's, I guess they though "why have the wheel duplicate the center of the drum." Within a few years they figured out why -- it is pretty easy to warp a drum surface with the lug bolts so close to the drum face. _________________
