Man I can't seem to win. Now that I got the spacers on I won't be able to run that low turning.
Looks like I will have enough room but might have to roll the fenders if I want to run lower.
I ended up moving it up a some. I don't have a full tank of gas in there so it will prob drop some more. Going to put air ride on this anyways so should be good.
I took it for short drive and it actually turns now. Something was making a noise but doing brakes tomorrow and I hope that is the sound I am hearing. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Wait, why would you run spacers on the front? I saw the clearance issue in the rear, and the spacers seemed to fix that. Front looked like it cleared well without the spacers? |

Too close to the arms. It's a band-aid for now. If you do this run disc in the front with 4" beam. I have seen 2" beam but have rubbing issues on fenders. If narrowed 17" x 4 1/2 rim were an option I would not even mess around with it. @ $1000 for two not an option.
As for the rest thing drums or adapter drums. They are both around 1" I hope this helps someone. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Starting the rough aliment. This one is going to be little more difficult for some reason. My 69 turned out pretty good but little more hesitant on this one. Going to spend a few days on it take my time.
Brakes are close but I think little air in the lines. Need to adjust the drums little more. My drums were rubbing on my backing plates and fixed that. Drove it around the block forgot what it was like to drive a dub again.😁 _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

I really like this project. Can't go wrong with that OG beige, a little patina, and that low stance on big wheels! Love it.
FWIW, I had issues getting my 17s to fit too, and ended up with a 1" spacer up there due to the wheel offset. I have widened fenders, so I can only imagine how tight it will be with stock fenders.
One thing I had to do was trim the ears on my balljoint shock towers. I also had to set my steering stops so that the rim wouldn't contact the sway bar mount. One thing you might also consider is lengthening your trailing arms, so that the wheel sits centered in the wheel well. With the 17s, you probably have enough balljoint clearance to get away with one inch longer arms and buy yourself some room. _________________ -Thomas

Yeah front 1" spacers have plenty of turn radius. Don't like them so down the road disc in front. As for the rest 4 in dropped plates with 5 lug drum adapters for 68. With the one inch spacers in the rear I have plenty of room. I thought the ride would be crappy in the front but pretty smooth and will be better once I get the air shocks going. I'm just running static now and the rear bottoming out is annoying.
Will keep the 1" longer arms in my bag of tricks for sure but it's down on my list of things to get done though. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Update My rear drums are lightly hitting the backing plates.. The plates are not bent so the drum must be little out. I am going to change back to the 68 backing plates anyways with NEW drum adapters. I will prob just roll with it how it is now. Only running around town anyways in spring. Its just really annoying. I thought I was going to be able to save the steering box but its too gone I think. Either new TRW or use the OG box off the 68 beam. It's been awhile. I been having problems with the carb not running well so I wanted German stock carb to match the dizzy. Hit Tim up at VolkzBitz he does amazing work!
Nice and flat and machined surface.
Lots of detail to the carb inside.
everything is very nice and well done.
I would not hesitate to recommend getting your carb done or buying one outright which I did. I can not wait to get this on but I have some cleaning to take care of before it goes on. Also I am going to send out the distributor too since its the OG to the bug. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Thanks! It's been a long time but I hope to get some more done soon as I get the garage cleaned up. My 8yr old daughter is heavy into cars so going to start her on the bug. Going to pull the motor and give it a good cleaning and then see where all the oil is coming from. 😂 I'm sure it's never been cleaned. What I really like is all the stuff is there.
Dog house control
The tab that bolts to the carb is still there on the air cleaner.

Bottomed out pretty good the other day. I figured I would make a skid plate out of 1/4 inch steel.
Printed it out to 1:1 ratio.
Cut out the template.
Cut the bend lines. I am sure it's going to be little tight since I only have 1/8 cardboard.😁
First fit up and did some trimming.
I hope it's going to be even with the outside beam I have already ground down some. It's not the OG beam, that's tucked away in the shed.
I think I'm going to move the slots down and make them bit smaller. Overall I think it's not bad.
I will try and post up some pictures when I start fab it up. Hopefully I will start that next week. All for now! _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Found one year only radio here on the Samba unknown working condition. I got two and It was a good deal. All the knobs and buttons work so that is good. If I can't get not get either one working might gut it or send it out. There is a lot of things going on since it's a FM radio. Inside of one does not look good but the other is pretty good. Though the dirty one light does come on. I have not tested to see if I get any sound out of them yet.
I have an old Kenwood shaft radio in there now so the cubby is full. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Yeah it's dead but it wasn't supposed to work anyway. The Kenwood board is to wide so it won't fit. I love the patina the radio has and it fits the age and wear.
I think I will keep a lookout for an old shaft radio that I can gut or send it out.
Getting closer to getting the plate done but I might have to do it over again. I was trying to hurry to much when I was cutting it.
All for now hope to get it done this week. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Been little busy changed jobs at work so I will be welding and fixing stuff a lot more. Skid plate is on hold till I get settled in my new position. So pulled my OG Steering box off my beam in the shed and it looks little dry.
Cleaned all the old grease out. I use mineral spirits, the non smelling kind. Cuts the grease pretty good but still really messy.
Got all the parts cleaned up ready for the grease.
Used the corn head grease and got it back together.
I used some plugs I had in my tool box.
Going to try and get this in this next weekend. I might pull the front beam an paint it. Since it sat outside for a week while I was doing the trans on my suburban. Its got surface rust from the moisture as it rained most of the week. All for now and thinking of a way to do bags in the back bolt on wise. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Welp beam is still in no chance of doing it. Need to figure out a way to get zirk fitting in by the steering box. Then grease the front as I only packed the races by hand.
Parts update:
I located some spring plates locally and shipped them to Womack's since I wanted to keep the OG ones in tacked.
They came well packed and second day priority mail. The welds look good paint is decent but this is a driver and I don't have to do it. 😉 I still have not finished my skid plate been to hot at work and I plasma cut the wrong line, so I have to redo it. 🙄 Going to use this one as a bend template so it's not total waste of time. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.
