Been years since an update.
The 1200 in it wasn’t up to scratch. A random engine guy rebuilt it with twin carbs and huge valve springs and a bunch of other bits that didn’t work together. So it was working hard against itself, as well as put together with silicone, so the oil flow stopped, and bearings stopped things from spinning.
Had a SP 1600 sitting around, checked it out and was still good internally. Got a 1640 kit, had some higher comp heads rebuilt and put back together. Torquey as hell and pulls hard. Kept it simple to keep any problems to a minimal. Still stoked how it turned out!
Couple of pics.

Fast forward year’s again. I get a call from him saying “I’ve done something bad, I think I broke it” so down it came and it turns out the fulcrum plates and axles were worn, and he tried to roll start in reverse, it bound up an snapped an axle..
So it all had to come out now. Dammit.. I grabbed the 1500 box that was in my oval for a while that was ok from memory, that will now be the donor box for it again…
Just waiting on new seals and bits to get it back together with. _________________ shiny paint doesnt make it worth any more |

about time.
would it be worth bringing up the pan, the doors, guards etc, so when Bree gets annoyed about a new vw turning up, you can tell her "it was free so i had to accept it" (and it looks like a free, fairly complete, car not a free bare shell that needs everything)
even dumber thought... weekend build, in the paddock - drive out? (well drive out and on to a trailer) |

Game changer…
Work was throwing out a 500kg ram lift trolley, so I liberated it from its demise!!
What a difference that makes! No crouching and back problems anymore. So good!!
Fulcrums and axles are good, oil on them makes them look worse than they are. only a little wear and tear overall which is nice.
New seals for front and rear, new housing seal and axle plate seals, wasnt too impressed with the axle seals tho, no choice in thickness in the kit. So 2 were too many, and one is a little tight..
Bearing in and box installed, but just loosely to get it aligned up correctly.

Box all bolted in, brakes and hubs on so I can move the car out and start on the motor soon.
You forget how low/high cars are.. haha
