Congrats on your good eye at the swap, its a cool piece. These cannot be worth anything near those "asking "prices. |

These rear tow hooks are always very expensive and apparently very rare. Yet they are such a basic part.
Were they an option? Maybe Dealer installed? and if not, what years had them?
Why are they so rare? _________________ Marc

i just picked one up and have similar questions. I searched the archives and tech bulletin's etc and couldn't find any info (there are archive info for bus variety).
Did Ghia's ever come with tow hook integrated on the bumper iron? _________________ '59 Ghia build thread https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737729

The front of my 71 has a tow iron welded on the bottom of the passenger side front beam, but no rear tow hook when I bought it. _________________ Marc

I have one on my 71. Never could figure out how it was really used, and not sure if I will install, maybe just to have more original parts on mine. Although if they are so rare or desirable, I might sell it, maybe I can buy some new tires with the cash!! Doubtful though.

I agree with "Disc" above that the rear tow hooks were not painted, just left bare metal.
I bought quite a few parts from a rotted out 1971 Vert Last fall including a rear tow hook. The car was almost completely original right down to the rear tow hook and this one was never painted.
These rear tow hooks only seem to be on 70 & 71 models which would make sense being that 70 & 71 rear bumpers are 2 year only parts.

I thought I read somewhere that they were used for the ride over from Germany. Or, maybe I dreamed it. BTW, I also have one from my '71 coupe and it's not painted either. |
