I didn't look back through this whole thread, so may be a duplicate, but...
This past weekend we were in the Cortez CO area and I happen to drive past this fenced off auto yard. I counted over 20 bugs, a couple of buses, a giha, and at least one type III.

That steering wheel looks like the cars you see that go up in flames, but I don't see much evidence of a fire.... _________________ .

Sunlight cracks the plastic, then water seeps in through the cracks and rusts the metal frame of the steering wheel. Rust expands as it forms, thereby flaking off more plastic thus exposing more metal, and before you know it you're down to the rusty and rotten remnants of a steering wheel. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

That one is a bit much. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”

This poor Oval was found sitting inside dense undergrowth that had grown over it for many years. It had been purchased by the owner several years back, and left outside slowly disappearing under the foliage that covered it.
This will account for the reason it was rotted top and bottom, with holes in the roof, and the bottom of the car all but gone.
I was featured on YouTube, where the rescue of the car was shown. |

Thanks, that makes sense.
I've seen a few other cars that had trees or bushes growing through them and they get a lot of strange rust.
Story time:
A long time ago I found a Panel Bus in CA. Basically zero rust, except for one piece of the roof where a tree branch has been sitting on it for many years. There was a hole there and the entire area was rotted out.
Really weird considering how clean it was otherwise. _________________ How to Post Photos
