So I scored a cooler, fan and AN hose & fittings at the Bug-o-rama over Memorial Day, along with some other items. The newish cooler will be used in conjunction with an OEM doghouse cooler. Looking at mounting it under the "back seat". I found some scrap angle iron in the shop, and knocked together the first rev. of my cooler mount. It's fairly "industrial" looking, but I believe it will hold a cooler. The angle will be welded to the torsion tube and the cooler "floated" on rubber isolators. Waddya think Sambanistas?

I approve this cooler mount (but I could be wrong too, lol).

The last pic from the motor shop is very nice. They're waiting on me now, to provide an exhaust before cam break-in begins

So a couple of days ago I stopped by my local (old school) VW shop for a few items I was still missing...(Thanks a bunch Jim!)

Jim was able to provide me with a couple of missing OEM type items including:
A (neused and tested good) Bosch starter

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The shifter coupling cover

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And the front tunnel cover

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Purists may piss-off that I chose to use NON-OEM hardware...!

OEM braided jumper from trans mount to trans. It has a small hole on the top & a large hole on the bottom and is EXACTLY the right length!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Also, because the EMPI clutch cable shortening is a complete POS and only serves to eat the cable, the hardware store & a collection of honyock fittings were sourced to make the connection Embarassed

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The oil cooler was mounted for the last time... Rolling Eyes

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Including the temp switch

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The fan and the temp switch are fitted with plugs that are the opposite of each other, preventing the fan power from being plugged into the temp switch & vice versa... but they DO plug into each other! Cool

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

A second set of caster bushes were added for "high speed" stability, along with the necessary longer bottom bolts

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

At the end of the day, I dropped the body back on and... TA DA! the cooler fan hits the body and was promptly removed, leaving an un-fanned oil cooler Embarassed

Be safe guys.

By how much? Could you take the spacers/isolators out below the cooler? On my class 9 car the oil cooler is behind our head (directly in the wind), with the fan on the temp drops nearly 20*. My buggy doesn't have a temp gauge so not sure what the temps are currently with the oil cooler in the same place as yours.

I suppose I "could" remove the rubber biscuits, but, I'd rather have them there and no fan, than solid mounted with a fan.

I have a stock new cooler in the dog house. I will get gauges set up and drive it as-is for now. If I think it should be cooler, I will plumb in the aux cooler. If that still needs "assistance" I will probably notch the glass & fab up a "box" to go over the fan.

It only hits by 1/2" I expect, but a hit is as good as a mile. Embarassed

The brown truck showed up at the house over the weekend! He brought my new header Very Happy

I have bagged on EMPI pretty hard in the past over their amazing lack of quality control. This stainless header is "almost" enough to make me want to take it all back. It's that good. Thick flanges that actually look like they were touched with a file to flatten the mounting surfaces, insides of the head pipes and collector that are just buttery smooth and free from any sharp edges. I was just very pleased with the attention to detail from the fabrication department at EMPI. Shocked

But you know it's coming, right.......

BUT

The kit came with 2 #4 cylinder pipes and NO (0) #2 pipes! AAAaaarrrggghh!!! Mad Brick wall d'oh!

That last pic had me wondering how you got the correct #2 pipe so soon, until looking closer at its flange and seeing its cock'd with respect to where studs are. (Hope the fix isn't too much of a hassel.)

I had a stinger like that on my Buggy for a while and I got tired of tripping over it real quick! So did everyone else that tried to walk around or past it!

Thanks to a fellow Sambanista, I have a new (to me) 1 5/8" merged header for my buggy project. Over the last few weeks, I have determined that this one might be the last one in the world!

Thanks Anton, very much!

I'm really blessed to work at a facility that allows me to access all the stuff in the maintenance shop at will!

This morning before it got hot, I annealed my copper exhaust gaskets in preparation to install the header this weekend.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I'll be taking delivery of a matching stinger and baffle today. Really looking forward to this! Twisted Evil Also on the truck is a set of battery cables, an ignition switch & some other bits & bobs.

Waiting in the garage is another box full of the final components to tie up the fuel system, except the tank Confused OEM speedo and a set of Autometer gauges Monster tach, oil pressure & temp.

I hope to put a big dent in the next steps towards turning my hard earned $$cash$$ into noise!

8/29/22 Update:
My Number 1 helper was over and since he already volunteered to install dash lights and gauges, it made perfect sense that he would install the ignition switch as well. Thanks Theodore!

I got to spend some time in the shop this weekend. Managed to get the fuel system complete-ish... from the bottom of the gas tank to the carbs in the back

Update 9/18/22

As it's cooling off, I got to spend some time in the garage over the weekend.

My fuel tank is back from the radiator shop. Thanks Randy. Beautiful work as always.

And NOW the fun part begins! Another package was delivered from Speedway Motors! The "Universal Hotrod Wiring Harness" is intended for a front engine car, and needed some modifications prior to being installed. All of the "engine" type circuits were removed from the front harness and installed into the rear harness, and the "gas gauge sender" was moved to the front.
