Made it home! The trip was excellent, wifeys booth crushed it. She had her single best day on Saturday, woot woot. It was pretty hot, but we survived. We camped about 100 yards from our booth, we ate out every meal (which made packing a lot easier), we rode bikes and swam in the river. A good time was had by all!!!
I have a few things I’m gonna do to the bus before our next trip on 8/31. I’m going to readjust the rear torsion (again), replace the leisure battery (it’s days are numbered), install a quick disconnect on the leisure battery so it doesn’t drain when the bus is inactive and I’m going to hook the rear light switch on the dash to the second fuse box.
Here’s us and the booth
Red Mountain Pass is definitely one of the prettiest drives. The bus was idling at 800 when I took this pic.
Trip stats:
Total mileage: 177
Oil consumption: 0
Fuel: 3/4 a tank
Mechanicals: 0
Mountain passes crossed: 6
Nights camped: 2 _________________ __________

Trips and bus look awesome. I assume you're going to adjust the rear end up a bit more? How much? |

Yes, I’m gonna raise the rear a bit. Apparently I’ve been doing that adjustment wrong all these years, who knew. 🤷♂️ But, now I’ve been properly educated on the subject. Which I’m sure will make the job go faster and hopefully how I want it the first time. I have time set aside in two weeks to do it, I’ll post on my build thread when I’m finished. _________________ __________

Ha, no solar for me! I believe the issue is that I don’t drive it everyday day anymore, the leisure battery is getting drained. So I’m going to put a switch or disconnect on the negative terminal so I can unhook it when it’s not in use for extended periods of time. I’m saving miles on the bus engine by driving the beetle everyday. At least I’m still in a ACVW.

Thanks Manfred. Been in four trips around the state in the last month, every one of them has been beautiful. One me trip to close out the summer over Labor day weekend. We’ll, it’ll be more like a 6 day 5 night trip and we’ll be at a festival. That adventure is always a blast!

It’s in my build thread. Basically I was doing it backwards. I was rotating the inner towards the front of the bus and the spring plate down. It’s supposed to be done the opposite way. There’s also an equation I was not aware of that you use to figure out exactly how many splines you need to move both ends.
I’ll take the spring plate measurement while it is in the resting position. Then I’ll jack it up by the transaxle mount to where I want it to be and take the measurement again. I want ~1/4” gap between the spring plate and the stop, right now I have ~1/2” gap. I’ll take the difference between both measurements and insert that number into the equation. Let’s say that number is 2°, although I don’t know what the number actually is, it’s just a number to show you the equation.
2° x 60’ = 120’ / 40’ = 3
So to raise the rear 2° I’ll need to turn the inner towards the rear 3 splines and the spring plate up 3 splines. _________________ __________

The rear rack looks great! I think it's time to consider a small trailer as you have the HP to pull it and it will free up the inside. _________________ *******************************

How does it handle with the lower rear end? Windy mountain roads are more fun with a lower center of mass. Like a dropper seat post in the berms _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

We made the festival. The bus didn’t have any issues with the load, I just put it in 4th and cruised 60-65 the whole way. Temps were good and there was no issues with handling. I did leave some extra stopping room because of the added weight.
Dropper posts make you lazy.

Made it home. The festival was awesome and wifeys booth crushed, it was her best festival ever! People were throwing money at us, woot woot! Our camp was fun and the awning wall I put up gave us a lot of privacy. The music and food were both excellent. The bus got a tad warm climbing Yellow Jacket Hill on the way home, so I slowed and dropped it to 3rd and just cruised up. The bus was really loaded and it was pretty hot out. No biggie though, as it quickly cooled engine breaking down the backside. When you’re as loaded as we were, the bus really maintains speed well engine braking down hill.
Next trip in 4 weeks!!!
Trip stats:
Total miles: 135
Fuel: 1/2 tank, not bad for being so loaded
Oil consumption: 0
Mechanicals: 0
Nights in the bus: 5
Fun times had: ♾

Rich I always enjoy your posts. My sister and husband have lived in Ouray for over 40 years. We have driven over Red Mountain many times.
The first time was in 1969 with 16 year old me driving the family 68 Dodge Polara pulling a small tent trailer. In a downpour. Going south from Ouray..yes on the outside with those thousand foot drops and no guard rails. Later we crossed in a Mazda MPV with trailer, a 4Runner with a different trailer and twice in the Eurovan. Never have taken the 69 to Colorado. Too much hot weather without a/c and those hills with a stock 1600 are "intimidating" to us.
Glad your travels seem to go so well. They show excellent planning and preparation. Treasure these time with you family. _________________ Larry in OB

My kids were at that festival over the weekend, they told me Gangstagrass was the crowd favorite this year. Do you agree Rich? _________________ I Corinthians 4: 1 thru 5

Gangstagrass was pretty good, Bailey liked Heartless Bastards, but I would say the buzz of the weekend was about Dirtwire. I overheard a lot of people talking about their show. We are working pretty much all day, so most of the music is kinda back round for us. The way the vendor area and vendor camping is set up we definitely have no issues hearing the music. But, we are usually preoccupied to give it all of our attention. If I’m not in the booth selling, I’m running support for the family. I’m entertaining Miles and his buddies, or taking the kids swimming, or making beers and ice runs, or getting snacks, or making food, or getting food from the food vendors. There’s always something for me to do. During the Ganstagrass performance a big storm rolled through. So I had to move merchandise into the booth and put up 3 of the 4 tent walls. Then I had to high tail it back to camp, move the chairs and stuff under the awning and adjust the awning so water would run off it instead of pooling. I’m always busy. I saw a lot of local people, everyone was friendly and everyone seemed to be having a great time! It was a super fun festival!
I should have added this to my trip report and didn’t, so I’ll add it here. I installed a new leisure battery before the trip, the one I had was at the end of its life. All I did was install it and drive to the event. The battery lasted the whole 6 days and 5 nights we were there. We changed our phones and our neighbors phones, Miles iPad and Nintendo, the Square, used the interior lights and our usb powered Edison lights at night. Stoked to have a good battery again. Hopefully my new disconnect will allow it not to be drained while the bus is inactive and it has a nice long life. _________________ __________

Dave Cook was in Durango this weekend. Yesterday we hooked up around 2 and went camping in La Plata Canyon. We linked up at the gas station and headed out. We stopped a bunch driving up the canyon scoping out camp spots. Most were either taken or no longer alowed camping. The further we drove in the road the rougher it got, “let’s go a little further, dave. I know of a spot just up the road a bit.” We ended up finding a spot at 10,500’ at the beginning of the 4x4 trail. We parked Daves Eurovan and headed up the 4x4 trails in Peryl. First we headed to Columbus Basin, it was super beautiful but our Journey was stopped buy a huge hole in the trail that we were unable to cross. So we headed back and then attempted the climb to Keneback pass. The trail was a lot smoother then it use to be and we made it to the top in Peryl with ease. Once we got to the top, we took some pics and headed out on a hike on the Colorado trail to a alpen lake that was near by. Dave a I decided to jump in, cause it always a good idea to go skinny dipping at 11,500’ in a spring fed lake with someone you met on the internet. 😂
After swimming we hiked back to the bus and decended back down to camp. Where Dave got a raging fire going and we grilled steaks. This morning we were up and out pretty early as Dave had a 10am appointment. We crawled back down the road to civilization. Dave took a quick shower at my house and headed on his way. It was a awesome adventure with dave and I’m sure will have more in the future.
