This is a very interesting picture, one which reminded me of the 'Think it over, New York, Chicago, San Francisco' ad from Life magazine in 1964. The colors don't look right but sometimes its hard to tell with black and white photos. Otherwise all the details appear to match up, including the rates displayed on the door, taxi light mounted over the sunroof, and meter handle visible in the front windshield. The only difference I see is the radio antenna and license plate was removed for the ad. If only I could see that quarter panel ...

Of course, Doyle Dane Bernbach was located in New York where this picture was taken. I like how the ad state 'There are no real Volkswagen taxis. But there is one very good fake.'

I think you are right. I seem to remember that DDB didn't do much in the way of touch-up or using stylized pictures in their VW ads, unlike other car ads of the day. But that sunroof sure looks funky.

And that airbrushing looks like colorization of a B&W photo. DDB did B&W (almost) exclusively, so this isn't surprising. This probably explains why the "colored" sunroof looks weird.
