Can somebody please advise if any model/year KG ever left the Factory with Carpet over the Tunnel, or was it a rubber mat |

Yes as far as I can tell what I removed in the restoration was original. Also carpeted were the kick panels, the top of the heater channels, the area surrounding the back seat and the luggage area behind the seat.

Not sure what was the first year, but my all original 68 has carpet over the tunnel and I know of a 64 with original interior that has carpet on the tunnel. I also know of a 63 with the same and I'm pretty sure its original as well. _________________ Marc

Thanks Guys, The reason I asked is that Kevin and I are trying to help a Client restore a 64 Emerald Green Coupe - not exactly a common colour - back to original specs and I was not sure of the carpet on the Tunnel - Looks like Kevin will have to make a complete Carpet set
Thanks again |

1961 and later had carpet on the tunnel and rubber mats on the floor, I think starting in 1972 they came standard with floor carpets.
I would suggest Newton for the carpets. I got the German wool square weave kit for my 1962 and the price was far better shipped than anything you can get in the US and the fit and look is close to stock, though to exact as the Ghia carpets had a smaller weave but I don’t think anyone sells that.
Anyway, here’s the link: https://newtoncomm.co.uk/pages/vw-interior-trim
For the correct mats, if they are black you can get very nice ones from Airhead, if colored then you will have to get them from Luis.
I also have an Emerald Green Ghia, light grey interior. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Anyone know who makes the chrome ends to the drivers door strap on the 58-59 door panels? And the metal backing for that same strap that holds the strap to the door. Two holes not like the arm rest that has one hole on each end?
Thanks

Hi,
I've seen pictures of original, cloth insert seats with piping, and without. This original 1960 car has them:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1960-volkswagen-karmann-ghia-2/
while this 1964 interior does not:
Mine's a 62. I'm about to hand over the seats to an upholsterer so I'd like to get this detail correct.
Thanks,
Mike

My German delivery 62 Ghia came with cloth inserts and had no piping between the cloth and vinyl.
I looked up the ‘60 on BAT (your link is bad) and my guess is that it’s a one year only seat. 1960s had lots of one year features and carried over a lot of lowlight features. For example, they were the last year to have the lowlight like rubber mats and my sense is they were the last to use the 58-59 center piping on the seat backs (55-57 seats also had no center piping on the back rests). _________________ Go Reds! You might get lucky and they’ll have it in stock, or you might get unlucky and have to wait over six months for it. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Can anyone put a date or chassis number on when the door panels lost the "kick up" at the front of the middle section?
I have a February '61 car, the first month of the smooth dash pad, but it had no interior door panels. The interior was red, so it should have red door panels with an off-white centre section
Should the centre section of the door panel be straight like the '62s shown in this thread, or should it go up diagonally at the front like on a '60?
Grateful for any help. |
