I have to clean up the edges and make sure it all fits
Then I’ll use the spot welder to attach the donor frame

Small setback today
I Purchased a spot welder Friday to weld the donor clip in to place
My welding skills
With the MIG are lackluster, so I felt the spot welder would keep Me from blowing through

That’s not the issue
The issue is I neglected to realize that the metal has to be bare on all 4 sides of the metal being welded together
So, the clip had to come back out so I could remove the paint on the body (the clip was sand blasted already)

Anyway, here’s a progress shot before I put the clip back in
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

You’ll notice that the metal in front of of the hole is all wavy and dented
I did that
I clamped it too hard when putting the clip in last time
Ugh

I trimmed up the donor clip and the roof some more
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I trimmed it up to the edge of the front lip I’ll use filler on the seam so it doesn’t show
The other three sides will be covered so it’s not a big deal really
I then started the spot welds
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I move the clamps and keep spot welding , jumping from side to side and front to rear so it doesn’t get too hot and start warping

I finished the first pass around the perimeter
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I’ll go back around filling in between all these welds
I will also clean up the edge of the cut roof
Feels pretty solid already

Thank you
I was Very intimidated to cut a perfectly good roof
But in hindsight, it wasn’t a big deal
I filled in the gaps with spot welds, but forgot to take pics

I spent some more time today sanding it down
It still needs filler on all the spot welds and especially on the seam on the front lip ( and the dents I made)
But I’m happy with how it is progressing

I have to drill new holes for the rear roof screw plate

I jump around so I don’t get burnout or start hyper-fixating on stuff
Today I decided to remove the rusty carpet mounts from the door sills
They had rusted through and needed replaced
I have replacements already, but won’t weld them in until later
Here is what I mean, it’s the part that the carpet tucks under on the sides
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I folded the trim up and used a sharp chisel to cut the spot welds
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then I ground down the old welds
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I know it doesn’t look like much but every little bit makes the car better

Found something new to address

There’s a crease in the right front corner from the front end damage that happened before I got it .
It’s a small bump , but with all the other work I’m already doing I cant just let it go lol
Anyway, I’m gonna have to pound this back out too

Hey Slave1pilot! Nice build thread! Just spent an hour reading through the 17 pages! Great story!!! Crazy that one of the PO had the car repaired with tons of Bondo! The shit one finds. Great job! Keep on going. It is looking great!

Thank you so much
Sorry about the missing pictures throughout the thread

I spent a few days stripping the paint off with the surface conditioner from harbor freight and a wire wheel

I then used a DA Sander from 60 grit up to 180 grit

I’m going to continue up to 320 grit before filler and primer

I continued on with the roof (no pics cuz it’s just the roof lol)
After that was sanded to 180, I stripped the hood
The PO had used some kind of grinder in the past to strip paint, leaving all of these marks
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

If you zoom in you can see how bad they actually are

A skim coat will fill them in , but there’s also a few dents to address as well
Overall not bad so far
Next up is stripping the doors
Wish me luck

I forgot that I already had the doors sandblasted when they did the first body
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I resurfaced them and then used the DA
They are in bad shape
Lots of dents and bumps
Also the sheet metal is flimsy and it pops in and out
There’s a term for it but I cant remember it right now
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The other door is worse
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The hinges are sprung and bent back too far into the metal on both doors
So, I’m in the market for a pair of good doors at a decent price

Thank you , I couldn’t remember
Maybe i can shrink them back up

I moved on to the front fenders today
I bolted them loosely on the car to make it easier to strip them

Extra holes and lots of dents and dings that need addressed
This is why I stripped it to bare metal

Are you using that surface conditioning tool to get that satin finish on your metal? It looks like new, raw metal, other than the dings that give it away.

Do you have recommendations for that tool? Good to have?? Easy to use? Recommended wheels? I noticed some are like Scotch-Brite.

Not for the satin finish
The resurfacing tool makes it look like this
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then I use a DA sander with grits up to 180 to get the satin look
