1967 movie "Luv", filmed in the Los Angeles area. This scene has the Long Beach amusement park in background. Main character Harry Berlin (actor Jack Lemmon) is passenger in a Ruby Red '66 Beetle driven by Elaine May. She backs up out of the intersection at a red light and gently hits a white Mercury Comet Cyclone convertible.
Its driver (Harrison Ford  ) gets out and slugs Lemmon.
Note that the vent window rear chrome supports were removed to provide more camera angle. Also the small side light at the top of the B-pillar. |

This very week is the anniversary of the immense Woodstock music festival in 1969 which took place in the southern Catskill Mountains of New York. Public Broadcasting System's series "American Experience" made a documentary in 2019 "Woodstock: Three Days that defined a generation". As expected, many VWs are seen in the period film clips.
Blue '68/'69 Karmann Ghia Cabrio, probably Chrome Blue which is a '69 color. Rear shot of the same car from rcooled's gallery shown underneath. "TZ" letters on the NY lic. plate indicates Rockland County based on the Tappan Zee. Is that a "Automatic StickShift" decklid emblem?
Red Fastback parked precariously on highway median.
Ivory Bay window bus parked.
Dark blue Beetle in foreground. Rear view mirror mounted on door and not on top door hinge makes it a '68/'69. |

A few more from this 1951 movie, which was filmed in Bavaria, Germany to depict late WW2. Several Kuebelwagen are seen in background, including with flat panel doors which are likely simply patched for usability instead of authenticity. Main character Kpl Karl Maurer (aka "Happy", actor Oskar Werner) is a German prisoner of war recruited by the US Army to attempt to find intelligence about a German army stronghold location. If he looks vaguely familiar, he starred in a "Columbo" NBC Mystery Movie episode in 1975 named "Playback" (season 4, episode 5).
And the "KdF" in the garage-

YW, Max! Since we're about the same age, some of the music and bands from the Woodstock concert only started to interest me beyond my teenage years. I've been to the village of Woodstock numerous times in the '90's, sometimes in one of my ACVWs to participate in a VW meet that was held by the Hudson and Mohawk VW club at the time. The music festival took place about 60 miles SW of Woodstock in Bethel, NY which is just west of the town of Monticello. I really need to drive up to the Bethel Woods Center in one of my VWs for a "souvenir photo".
We have a mid 20's intern in the office who is from India. During lunch i was surprised to hear that he and several of his friends are very interested in classic rock music, from the '70's. After watching the above documentary a week ago, I mentioned to him if he's been to "Woodstock"/the Bethel concert location since it's only about 1.5 hrs from our office in northern New Jersey. He was shocked that it is "out here" instead of "out west". Today I told him that the band "Foreigner" played there this past Sunday, and he was speechless- and frustrated that he did not view the "events" section of the Bethel Woods website to see that.
Alright, back on topic. Max and I have common active interests in Type 3 and Karmann Ghias. So here are a few from the popular TV show "CHiPs", though I'd typically post these into the respective "movie/TV" threads in the Type 3 and the Ghia forums-

More occasional Type 4 sightings:
Yellow '71/'72 411 Sedan parked, with VWs in a small lot across the street. TV show "CHiPs", "Second Chance" season 3 episode 13, 1979. The "strong" yellow could be Texas Yellow, a 1972 color. '71 Shantung Yellow is more pale.
412 wagon parked, movie "The Prisoner of Second Avenue", 1975. Filmed in New York City, starring actor Jack Lemmon.
Red 412 Sedan parked on side street beyond the Formosa Cafe, located on Santa Monica Blvd. YouTube video "Hollywood 1970_1976". The 412 would be on North Formosa Ave. |
