Hello, I have a 1974 bus. I need to replace the door latch on the sliding door. It is stuck in the closed position and each time I try to shut it it just bounces off the receiver. I’m having trouble locating this part. The popular VW websites are showing replacement latches from 75 to 79 that look very similar, but what I’ve been told is that 74 is different. Can anyone help? |

That's news to me, the door latch changed drastically ~8/73, but not much after that, AFAIK they all interchange 74-79.
Maybe you can match up the part number from yours to one of these?: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php...ton=Search _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Did you give the mechanism a good cleaning and oil? _________________ "Always waiting for tomorrow ruined everything"

I had a similar issue with my 76's sliding door after putting in a new lower door track. I thought it was the latch and ordered a new one from CIP1 but they sent me one that didn't even have a latch hook part. It was if it was only partially built at the factory and was sent out that way. Just another CIP1 parts story.
Anyway, I then picked up a used one off Craigslist but had the same issue when I installed it. I took all the parts off, cleaned and lubbed them and made sure they fit together by hand. I put everything back on and it just took some adjusting of the receiver and some spacers to better align everything.
Maybe try doing something similar to make sure everything fits together properly and works as it should. _________________ *******************************

Thank you for the responses! I did oil up the old unit but it appears something broke within. The handles turn freely, the lock latch remains in the closed position. I will try finding an older unit online. |

Nothing lifts that front latch, the mechanism only releases the hold it has on it when you turn the handle so it can pop out of the front striker.
As mentioned try moving the striker around. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
