Paint looks killer.
You know I also have a Webasto sunroof. Mine I think is later, it has the folding type handle. Is yours early style with the fixed handle? Plus on mine the receiver is part of the sunroof assembly and not part of the body.

Thanks. Yes the handle is the fixed one. I left the Webasto tag and chrome sockets from the front on the car. I hope the body shop has them!

I put a close up of the front header where the remaining 3 parts go.

What does the handle say, think sunroof is the center word?

Here are some pictures from years ago when I got brave and cut the sunroof in as original. I ground the frame from the donor roof and then mounted it in mine. Measure 10 times, wait till tomorrow, measure again and then cut....

Wing nut oil filter

This is a picture of Ghia built in Dec 19, 1955 and it has a wing nut to secure the oil bath filter. When did this end? Maybe tied to the bus timeline. The first operators manuals show this filter.

From the Bus FAQ thread regarding air cleaners, this is the Bus change to spin-on from wingnut:

I assume Ghias may have been similar but not exact.
Using up anything that had already been delivered to Karmann and so on.

Thanks. The difference must be in Knecht vs Mann filters. Your note certainly shows different manufacturers.

My March of 56 Ghia has the Mann filter pictured here. Maybe based upon supply both could occur. I would say this is a "spin on" with bolt captive in the bottom bowel. This is what I am use to seeing in lowlights. You had some nice 11/55 Mann photos in the gallery that match my style.

After my photo you also had some wing nut air cleaner photos. It looks like the wing nut drives the stud/shaft that attaches to the elbow. I never saw one of these.

I wonder if by toggle type they mean the flip over spring type ones? I put a copy of what I believe could be toggle from a 59 Bus manual in the tech section.

Knecht early bus wing nut (more photos in gallery) I like the detail you point out of the clip to keep the bolt with wingnut from falling out when cleaning the filter.

May 59 Bus owners manual picture of air filter which looks like a toggle
Mechanism. I wonder if any of theses were on Lowlights. The Ghia manuals of the late 50s seem to show the spin on.

You make a good point about the dual providers of air cleaners.

I have heard it said that the wing nut ones were for Wolfsburg Buses only, which is up to March, 1956 but don't know if that is accurate either.

The one with actual clips is definitely a Bastard 40hp era air cleaner, which is 1959-1960

56 speaker grill

Thanks Andy for the 3D print file. I had 2 grills printed and just got them.

The 56 grills had 3 rows of slots that warped. They went to a harder material and 4 rows later.

Hope it fits well

I have a VDO tach to install. I have all of the original hardware and generator but it needs to be restored.

Are there new sending units. Mine worked with a drill powering it.

I also had a special unit to work on 6V made to look more like the speedo. I'll find a picture.

I brought out the old boxes of interior parts

Interesting to note these are original parts from my March 56 with some at the top of the photos from a Sept 57 Trout Blue parts Ghia.

I just noticed my original rear floor mats are longer. They go up under the seat further. Mine would be show worthy except where seat belts were added and it stretched the rubber.

The early 56 cars didn't have metal kick panels under the rear seat. I'm not sure when this changed. Maybe the rear rubber floor mats changed at the same time. The "newer" mats have a ".1" at the end of the part number. Also interesting the rears are matched part numbers, no right and left.

These interiors have the half rubber and carpet around the front and carpet heater channel covers.

There is not a metal channel that holds the carpet/rubber to the door jamb. A piece of heavy cargo mat held it together

I sent the 57 seats to Sew Fine back in about 1995 because they didn't have 56/57 patterns, so they used mine. They used a heavy almost Masonite panel, on the door cards, the snaps don't fit over the thicker board. Maybe I will have to modify all of them. My front seat centers were replaced so I could not use mine as the pattern.

Notice how the grey is all brown from smoking

The cardboard for the rear package shelf was in nice condition.

There is a fiber mat for the truck too that goes under the trunk liner. I still had the gas tank gasket too. Are these remade?

My fiber sound mats for the floor were good for patterns. Back in the day someone made sets with foam in the center and heavy tar board on the outsides I will try those.

I am trying to find someone to do the sunroof and headliner and would approach them with the interior.

The carpet is blue German square weave.

March of 56 rear floor mat and later ones that are shorter?

Where does the blue piece go in this picture? I have a right and left. Maybe by the back seat for some reason.

Great information.
Those little upholstery covered pieces go in the back above the wheel wells and continuethe quarter panel boards into the cargo area if that makes any sense.

Carol at Sewfine is going to help with the blue square weave carpet. I will send my carpet set to them because a few pieces are different and there is a lot of rubber like an Oval. They made the seats and door panels years back.

Just drove across PA to the pick up the body and reunite it with the chassis. Good winter project coming up.

Looks great!
Looking at your original interior pieces, I can’t believe how nice they look and am curious as to why you chose not to clean up, refurbish, and dye what you have vs going new? Are you going with a custom interior? I was never able to source an exact copy of the square weave Karmann used in the Ghias when I did my 56 which is later than your and only has carpet in the rear.

They look better in the photos.

I was going to use the vinyl but it is too stiff. The first owner was a smoker and everything was brown and some dry rotted.

I got some samples today the blue square weave looks good

Lighting with iPhone is problematic. We might actually go with VW Haartz pinpoint vinyl for the sunroof. One on left second up.
