I am working on getting my Megajolt setup running and I've come to mounting the Ford coil. As you can see, I have a Scat fanshroud with no coil mounting holes. I have made a spacer bracket piece to mount the coil on. I'd like to weld the bracket to the shroud by running a bead on the inside of the bracket. Are there going to be any issues with this?

Other than the dissimilar thickness metals. It should work.

The question is. Are you a talented welder, that can weld a very thick coil mounting bracket, to a very thin walled fan shroud?

You'd have to start the weld puddle on the thick part and transfer it to the shroud.

Have you considered mounting the coil and bracket, on the firewall?

Looks like you could just bolt it on or run some nut serts in the shroud ?

That's a good idea too.

I haven't seen any metric nut serts. Yet!
Who makes them and also makes the mandrels for the tool?

I've only seen/installed SAE nut serts.

I've been using metric ones for years, obviously you haven't looked very hard!

Yes, I would be able to weld a thick piece like that to thin sheet metal, but I like the nutsert idea. Never even heard of them before. Thanks for the replies.

With welding it on, what if it's in the way of something or later you want to move it?

I just moved mine to the firewall to clean up the engine compartment.

Yeah, that's a problem. At least with the nutserts, I could put a screw in them to plug the holes.

I'll take a look at the firewall idea.

In hindsight, perhaps I should have made my bracket to fit the stock coil bracket hole pattern. Then at least a stock coil could mount to the shroud down the road or if I sell it or something.
