well, I found rust. I'll put up some photos later, forgot to take any. Basically both rear inner arches at the join to the body there, both sides pretty much the same, although weirdly the drivers side was worse. Typically here we see more rust on the curb side as that's where all the stones and drains/puddles are. Not too bad and i'll try and tackle the welding repairs myself

On this side of the pond, the left side sees road salt. That's one of the reasons why our cars are usually rusted more on that side. In states that don't use road salt, they'll put sand or sand mixed with cinders which clogs up drain holes. My old 69 Square (similar color as yours) had some similar rust in places as yours does. It was a California car too, so it had minimal rust, but needed floor sections to fix it.

This was a Colorado, I guess they use salt?

Maybe in some areas, but who's to say where the car might have traveled in it's life. I mean it's now on the other side of the pond from where it used to reside. Wink

Here is the headliner completed. Its a TMI headliner sourced through ISP West and supplied to me by the previous owner. I'd like to take credit, but this was beyond my skills sadly - installation carried out by Austin Watts at Waboo Automotive in Hereford, UK.

I got some trim for the side window (second to last photo) - it was an amazon purchase. I bought white also but it was bright white so didn't look right against the cream/off-white headliner. Its ever so slightly shallow so doesn't come all the way up to the seam - i'll wait and see how it looks when all of the windows are in - I plan to use this around the doors also.

Headliner looks great. I know about the "it's beyond me" statement as well, as I'll cut the roof off before I'll try another headliner install. Laughing

scored a tailgate at a local swapmeet - not bad for $50. I'll find out tonight if its the same colour and will match the car - mine has a dent in it which will be difficult/costly to repair. This one also comes with a heated rear screen. The screen, badges, light, lock and license plate make this a pretty good buy!

Yeah, but now you'll have to swap the tranny for an automatic so it matches the hatch! Wink

Don't expect the defogger to work. What you see is the brown primer applied to the glass so the copper/brass resistive elements will adhere. The element itself is almost certainly long evaporated.

Yup, I was thinking the same thing about the heated rear window, in that the heating element is probably gone. Windex and similar glass cleaning products shouldn't be used on that window as they eat the element for heating the glass.

i'm planning to refit the original glass anyway as it has the cool ghost remnant of a triple a decal

Time will tell if the UK police will accept this or not...

UK law is quite prescriptive regarding plate size/style/font and placement

I've been running my Karmann Ghia on a Louisiana style plate (no front) my beetle with a rear plate only and the fastback with California style plates and have gotten away with it so far. It seems that police so far have turned a blind eye...

Here is the latest progress. I have the body all but completely stripped now. I've fitted new rear brake cylinders, shoes and flexible hoses. The drums and other hardware were fine. All the brightwork has been polished.

The welding is now all completed. Next is to prime and paint all the bits of the car which won't be seen, hopefully keep it from major rust for another 50+ years. I'll be keeping the paint as is, so I'm painting some panels which have small surface rust, i'll then sand/polish this back through to blend with the rest of the patina. The tailgate I scored at the swap meet has polished up very nice. Hopefully I will get the brakes, axle boots, gear linkages finished this weekend and maybe one or two of the windows installed

The repairs look good. I've seen worst rust. A good example of that is the 71 Notch I rebuilt (link in my signature).

so we're planning an epic journey in March next year - UK to the Arctic circle in Norway, 5000 mile round trip over 16 days. Started with winter wheels and tyres. Quite a transformation on the wheels. We don't get harsh winters in the UK so proper 3 peaks tyres are hard to get in the UK. These are Dunlop Winter Response 2 tyres which get good reviews from ADAC in Germany as a full winter tyre.

That will be a great trip ! I drove up there in 2015 and loved it - And if you don't have a deadline, don't stop at the Arctic Circle as there is SO much to see north of there. The road is spectacular itself, but the scenery even better. Lofoten Islands etc stunning (catch the ferry out from Boda - Its only just N of the Circle - You won''t regret it). We went right up to Kirkenes and the Russian border Smile
Only hint is to carry as much booze and food as you can because it is SO expensive. If I did the trip again I would tow a little 6x4 trailer and fill it with booze at the border !!! Laughing Seriously !
It was a friend who first did the Norwegian Circle run in a Lotus Elise in 2009 that got me started on my Alaskan Arctic Circle Trip in 2012, and I then followed that up by doing the Canadian one in 2014 and the Norwegian one in 2015. Decided the Russian and the Greenland ones were a Bridge Too Far !!!
G

Edit - And make sure you do the Atlantic Ocean Road section, S of Trondheim. It will blow your mind. Google it for pics.

sounds ace - thanks. We plan to drive up along the west coast all the way to Nordkapp, as far north as its possible to drive in europe, and then south via finland and sweden along the baltic sea coast. Good notes on food and booze!!!

I haven't been to the garage yet to work on the car as the weather has been bad. I have the wheels home so thought i would embellish the logo. This is just the first coat, but i might let it go as is to match the patina of the car.

I'm not sure if this is allowed, i'm sure the site owners will deleteit if not. I'm going to try and raise funds for a cancer charity here in the UK on the back o our trip. Hoping to raise $1/€1/£1 for each mile of the trip.

thanks for looking

So the car is nearly finished. I stripped it and painted everything beneath the belt line to protect it for the future. All treated underneath, fenders and doors machine polished and treated, all fitted with new rubbers and trim. We're doing this mammoth drive for a UK cancer charity, so i decided to fit a different hood and invite people to sign or draw on it for a £10 donation. The big yellow thing is a bee in a honeycomb, made out of beeswax! I've just mocked up the lights, but these will be fully installed on a huge bracket at the front - necessary for driving in the arctic winter. I've loaned the car an engine, a 1776 out of my fastback. I converted one of the reverse lights to a fog lamp, and I also have a pair of yellow halla foglamps for the front. Just need to add door seals, fit the carpet and seats and get the headlights, horn and wiper motor working them we're ready to begin our adventure in just 2 weeks time. Its been a struggle but worth it, as the car looks exactly how i wanted it to!
