Got the Weber ICT dual carbs in today. Still a few details to complete like the vacuum advance distributor, vac lines, and crankcase breather. But man, what a difference in power! Has that dreaded flat spot from the 009 I read about
Also had to rig up a secondary return spring... Need to get a better spring and maybe tweak the throttle cable tube a bit to cut down the rubbing. Oh, and the throttle cable was too long..so we added a bit of tubing to the end and soldered it on..for something to clamp on to.
Happy to hear suggestions on how to better address some of these outstanding issues. Overall though, very happy with the duals! _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

Tailgate is solid, needs to be stripped and painted.
Got a new Wolfsburg West apron. Excellent part and great fit.
Spent a few more hours stripping paint in door edges and jambs. Lots more to strip.

A couple little jobs today. I think my fuel pump has been Vapor locking so I wrapped the metal line in rubber line and blocked off the breather cutout that’s no longer in use. I also got the front air vent moving again and installed a rear cargo door strap. It’s not correct but it works great. I prefer to be able to remove it easily, just like the front one.

Get the spark plug cable clips that plug into the three holes on the back of the fan shroud. Those cables should not touching metal parts to cause shorting out, especially when coming in contact with hot parts like intake heat riser pipes. Also those holes int he shroud are letting out cooling air you want to be pumping over the engine cooling surfaces, and not leaking back into the engine compartment.
Good you closed off the pre-heat tube to the stock carb, but easier less fuss to use two soup can lids with hole punched in center of each. Then with screw or bolt and nut, sandwich lids under and over the hole to seal it off.
Get the rubber seals on the lower part of the fresh air tubes to seal out the hot air under that rear tin.
Doubt you are having vapor lock especially this time of year, just too cool. Metal fuel line should only touch three places of the engine, front tin grommet, bracket on left side of fan shroud, and where it attaches to the fuel pump.

|

Sometimes the little things can feel so good. I spent the last couple nights reading door lock threads on here. I have the push button door handles and I have rekeyed all the locks to use one key, but just couldn’t get the driver’s door to lock. It went in to locked position it seemed, but you could unlock it just by pushing the button. I’ve had the lock assembly out at least a half dozen times trying to clean, adjust, lubricate…I found a tip tonight and adjusted the door striker on the body of the bus outward a bit. It worked a bit better, but still unlocked with some pressure on the button. I moved the striker up a hair. And it works! Still needs a bit of jiggling to get it to lock completely- I’ll play with that later. I’m just so happy to have all door locks finally working!
This year or more likely next the bus will hopefully get stripped down, bodyworked and painted in my buddy’s new shop. Gratuitous bus in front of shop under construction pic:

I had a very saggy driver seat. Coils are very hard to find and expensive so I tried getting some flat couch springs and putting them in. I need a couple more to even it out but worked great. I welded the ends to the seat frame. They come pretty coiled up so I bent them mostly flat first. Worked very well- much less saggy and still uses the old couls to support some of the load.

My friend and I started on fixing the rear bumper this holiday season. It was pretty rough..had been hit so lot of wrnkles, dents, and some beetle tailpipe cutouts:
Before
After
The before/after doesn’t do it justice… I’m happy with the results. Once it warms up I will prime and paint and get the overriders back on. _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

Today I replaced the main heat tube. The heater boxes need replacing but may work still. Most of the ducting was good both up front and coming off the heater boxes, other than the bottom of the y-tube as shown. I think it’s repairable though, which I will do eventually when I replace the exhaust system…probably a few years out still.
It seems WW sells all the parts, but getting them here is a bit pricey. To save time and money I did what others on here suggested and got some 2.75” OD
exhaust tube and a 2.75” ID connector. I had to taper both ends of the pipe as shown- they wouldn’t slide in otherwise. Next up I will paint them and install them, and see if I can get any carbon monoxide free heat up front!

Installed. I’m very excited to have working heat! I just put a screw through each side to hold it in place. It’s a pretty solid friction fit too. I will order the insulation and cables soon.

Over the past weeks I’ve been working in repair and preparation of the bumpers for paint. A good friend helped with the metal work and my neighbour did the final spray once I had all the bodywork done. Can’t wait to put them on! _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048
