I recently acquired a 63 type 1 and noticed it has a deep sump add on. Does this need to be removed before dropping the engine? I’m not familiar with this assembly and I don’t know if it can support the engine weight during removal.

Thanks in advance.

Yes you can leave it on to remove.

Just don't jack the car up using the sump. but once on jackstands its fine to leave it on

Here's my fully dressed engine sitting on the sump on a floor jack.

I left mine on. It's much easier to deal with on an engine stand than to try to remove it on the car.

Thanks guys. I will leave it on and not use it as the lift point during removal. I didn’t want to remove it while in the car. What a mess!

You can lift the engine with the sump, just not the car, never lift the car by the engine, deep sump or not.

Nope, never done that before but glad you mentioned it. I was just worried that the sump might get crushed supporting the engine weight alone.

I used to do that when I was a stupid teenager in the early 80's, not putting 2 and 2 together to realize the weight of the car was hanging by the tranny mounts.

You’re right. I really do worry too much and can make problems when there aren’t any.
